The POUNDING STONE, according to R. Abba bar Memel, is [what is called in Aramaic] 'crusher'.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Apparently a stone or piece of cement with a hollow for fixing the pounder in. ');"><sup>4</sup></span> The 'MAIDENS', according to R. Johanan, are cedar posts by which the beam is supported.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Strictly speaking, the beam was attached to a cross-bar joining two posts. These were what were called in Old French the 'gemelles' (twins), and in L. 'sorores' (sisters). ');"><sup>5</sup></span>
