ההוא דהוה כתיב ביה תילתא בפרדיסא אזל מחקיה לגגיה דבי"ת וכרעיה ושויה ופרדיסא אתא לקמיה דאביי אמר ליה מאי טעמא רויח ליה עלמא להאי וי"ו כפתיה ואודי
and converted<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lit., 'made'. ');"><sup>25</sup></span> [the second word] into, 'and an orchard'.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Heb., ufardisa, [H] 'and an orchard'. The text was thus made to read, 'in my garden a third and an (viz.. all the) orchard'; and on the strength of this altered text the buyer claimed not only a portion of the field but also the entire orchard. ');"><sup>26</sup></span> [When] he appeared before Abaye [the latter] said to him, 'Why has the <i>Waw</i> so much space round about it?'<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lit., 'What is the reason (why) the world was widened for this waw'.
