תנא דבי ר' ישמעאל למה נקרא שמן קשואים מפני שהן קשים לגוף כחרבות איני והכתיב (בראשית כה, כג) ויאמר ה' לה שני גוים בבטנך אל תקרי גוים אלא גיים וא"ר יהודה אמר רב אלו אנטונינוס ורבי שלא פסק משלחנם לא צנון ולא חזרת ולא קשואין לא בימות החמה ולא בימות הגשמים

The school of R. Ishmael taught : Why are they called "cucumbers" [kishshuim] ? Because they are injurious [kashim] to the body like swords. But it is not so ! For lo, it is written, "And the Lord said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb" (Gen. xxv. 23) — read not goyim "nations," but geim "lords"; and Rab Judah said in the name of Rab: These are Antoninus and Rabbi from whose table radish, lettuce and cucumbers were never absent either in Summer or Winter !
