מאי זה וזה לא היו מודין בפירות דתנן מותר שירי לשכה מה היו עושין בהן לוקחין בהן יינות שמנים וסלתות והשכר להקדש דברי ר' ישמעאל רבי עקיבא אומר אין משתכרין בשל הקדש אף לא בשל עניים

What does it mean “neither of these [two sages] allowed [a profit from the sale of] the produce?” As we have taught, What did they do with the surplus of the remainder in the chamber? They would buy with it wines, oils and fine flours, and the profit belonged to the Temple, the words of Rabbi Ishmael. Rabbi Akiva says: one may not make a profit with the property of the Temple, nor with the property of the poor.
