ואי ליכא תרי אלא חד מאי אמר אביי לכתוב חתימת ידיה אחספא ושדי ליה בבי דינא ומחזקי ליה בי דינא (וחזו ליה) ולא צריך איהו לאסהודי אחתימת ידיה ואזיל איהו והאי ומסהדי אאידך

And if there are not two, but there is only one, what [then]? Abaye said: He [the second witness] writes his signature on a piece of clay and places it before the court, and the court confirms it, and he need not testify to his own signature, and he goes with that one and they testify to [the signature of] the other [witness].
