ת"ר הרוגי מלכות נכסיהן למלך הרוגי ב"ד נכסיהן ליורשין ר' יהודה אומר אף הרוגי מלכות נכסיהן ליורשין אמרו ליה לרבי יהודה והלא כבר נאמר (מלכים א כא, יח) הנה בכרם נבות אשר ירד שם לרשתו
And theRabbis?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' How could they urge the fact that he had sons in face of the definite statement that they were slain? ');"><sup>18</sup></span> — They refer to his potentialsons.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lit., 'to the sons that should have issued from him.' — A murderer is held guilty not only of his victim's death, but also for the frustration of the lives of his potential descendants for all time.
