Musar for Bava Batra 149:15
עשן בחופה למה אמר רבי חנינא שכל מי שעיניו צרות בתלמידי חכמים בעולם הזה מתמלאות עיניו עשן לעולם הבא ואש בחופה למה אמר רבי חנינא מלמד שכל אחד ואחד נכוה מחופתו של חבירו אוי לה לאותה בושה אוי לה לאותה כלימה
And who are they? — Judah and Hezekiah the sons of R. Hiyya. One says: [<i>Kadkod</i> means] onyx; and the other says: Jasper. The Holy One, blessed be He, said unto them: Let it be as this one [says] and as that one.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' [H] a play on the word [H]. ');"><sup>29</sup></span> <i>And thy gates of carbuncles</i><span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Ibid. ');"><sup>30</sup></span>
Mesilat Yesharim
Regarding this our Sages of blessed memory said: "this teaches each person is burned from the Chupa (canopy) of his fellow" (Bava Basra 75a). This [burning] does not refer to jealousy which falls only to people lacking in understanding as I will explain with G-d's help. Rather, it is due to seeing oneself lacking from the perfection that he was capable of attaining just as his fellow had attained it.
