אמר עולא הלכה כרבי מאיר בקריעה והלכה כרבי יהודה בתוספת תניא נמי הכי רבי יוסי אומר תחילת קריעה טפח ותוספת כל שהו

Our Rabbis taught: The initial rending is [to the extent of] a handbreadth,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Four fingers, the width of the palm.');">³</span> and any extension thereof<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' on the intermediate occurrence of another bereavement.');">⁴</span>
