Bava Batra 194
דאמר רבא סוחט אדם אשכול של ענבים ואומר עליו קידוש היום
[Moreover,] Raba said: A man may press out a cluster of grapes<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' And this certainly is not better than wine from the vat. ');"><sup>1</sup></span> and proclaim over it the <i>Kiddush</i> of the day!<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' This clearly shows that wine from the vat may be used for Kiddush, even at the start. ');"><sup>2</sup></span>
ואלא למעוטי מפיה ומשוליה והא תני רבי חייא מפיה ומשוליה לא יביא ואם הביא כשר
Or, again, [if it is suggested that the object of Rab's statement is] to exclude<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' From eligibility for Kiddush. ');"><sup>3</sup></span> [the wine] at the mouth<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' On account of the mould that usually gathers near the top. ');"><sup>4</sup></span>
ואלא למעוטי יין כושי בורק היליסטון של מרתף של צמוקים והא תניא בכולן לא יביא ואם הביא כשר
[of the jug] and at the bottom,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' On account of the lees there, which gets mixed up with it. ');"><sup>5</sup></span> [it may be retorted]: Did not R. Hiyya teach, 'One must not bring [wine as a drink offering] from [the jug's] mouth or bottom, but if already brought it is permitted [to be used].! And [if it is suggested that the statement] excludes black, white,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' [H] 'shining'. effervescent. Others read [H] 'searching' (in the body), causing diarrhoea. ');"><sup>6</sup></span>
ואלא למעוטי יין קוסס מזוג מגולה ושל שמרים ושריחו רע דתניא בכולן לא יביא ואם הביא פסול
sweet,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' [G] a very weak wine. ');"><sup>7</sup></span> cellar,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Promiscuous wine, not tested. ');"><sup>8</sup></span>
למעוטי מאי אי למעוטי קוסס פלוגתא דר' יוחנן ור' יהושע בן לוי היא
and raisin wine; surely it has been taught<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Men. 86a. ');"><sup>9</sup></span> [that] all these must not be brought, but if brought already they are permitted! And [if it is suggested that the statement] excludes wine [which is] pungent, mixed,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' With water. ');"><sup>10</sup></span>
אי למעוטי מזוג עלויי עלייה דאמר רבי יוסי ברבי חנינא מודים חכמים לר"א בכוס של ברכה שאין מברכין עליו עד שיתן לתוכו מים
exposed,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Wine that remained uncovered during the night must not be used, for fear lest a poisonous snake may have drunk from it. ');"><sup>11</sup></span> made of lees, or having an offensive smell as it has been taught [that] in [the case of] all these, one must not bring [them] and even if brought [they remain] unfit, [it may still be retorted], 'to exclude which [of these was this statement made]'? If to exclude pungent wine, [this is surely a matter of] dispute<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Whether it is considered wine or vinegar. V, supra 96a. ');"><sup>12</sup></span>
אי למעוטי מגולה סכנה היא
between R. Johanan and R. Joshua b. Levi. If to exclude mixed wine, surely [when wine is mixed with water] it is improved, for R. Jose b. Hanina said:<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Ber. 50b. ');"><sup>13</sup></span> The Sages agree with R. Eleazar that in [respect of] the cup of grace after meals no benediction may be said over it until water has been poured into it.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Their wines were so strong that they could not be drunk without water; three parts of water to one of wine. ');"><sup>14</sup></span>
אי למעוטי של שמרים היכי דמי אי דרמא תלתא ואתא ארבעה חמרא מעליא הוא אי דרמא תלתא ואתא תלתא ופלגא פלוגתא דרבנן ואחרים היא
If to exclude exposed [wine], surely it is dangerous.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' And must not be used even for ordinary purposes. ');"><sup>15</sup></span> If to exclude [wine made] of Iees, [it may be asked], how is this to be understood? If three [jugs of water] were poured in and four [jugs of wine] came out, this [surely] is good wine. If three were poured in, and three and a half came out, this is a [matter of] dispute between the Rabbis and the others!<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Supra 96b. ');"><sup>16</sup></span>
אלא למעוטי שריחו רע ואיבעית אימא לעולם למעוטי מגולה ואע"ג דעברי' במסננת כר' נחמיה אפילו הכי (מלאכי א, ח) הקריבהו נא לפחתך הירצך או הישא פניך
But, [this is the object of the statement], viz., to exclude [wine] which has an offensive smell. If preferred, it may be said that [the statement] may even exclude exposed [wine] and, [as to the objection raised,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Supra, that such wine is dangerous and must not be used even for ordinary drinking. ');"><sup>17</sup></span> it may be replied that it excludes such wine] even though it was passed through a strainer<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Or 'filter', in which case there is no more danger in drinking it. ');"><sup>18</sup></span>
בעא מיניה רב כהנא חמוה דרב משרשיא מרבא חמר חווריין מהו אמר ליה (משלי כג, לא) אל תרא יין כי יתאדם:
in accordance with [the teaching of] R. Nehemiah,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Suk. 50b; B.K. 115b. The poison of the snake, he states, floats, and may be removed from the liquid with the aid of a strainer. ');"><sup>19</sup></span> [it] nevertheless [may not be used for <i>Kiddush</i>, because] Present it<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., the blind, the lame and the sick, mentioned by the prophet in the earlier part of the verse. ');"><sup>20</sup></span>
קנקנים בשרון וכו': תאנא פיטסות נאות ומגופרות:
now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee? Or will he accept thy person?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Mal. 1, 8. As those objectionable offerings (v. previous note) were condemned by the prophet, so is the use of any objectionable thing in connection with divine service (such, e.g.. as Kiddush) also to be condemned. wine [be used as a drink-offering]? — He replied unto him: Look not thou upon the wine when it is red.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Prov. XXIII, 31.
