שאם היזה ולא מיצה כשירה ובלבד שיתן מחוט הסיקרא ולמטה מדם הנפש:
for if he sprinkled but did not drain out, it is valid,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Thus it is valid even if he omits the draining altogether. Therefore it is certainly valid when he drains it anywhere by the altar.');"><sup>1</sup></span> provided that he applies some of the life blood below the scarlet line.
שלשה דברים כו': חטאת העוף הא דאמרן
[THAT HORN SERVED FOR] THREE THINGS etc. FOR THE SIN-OFFERING OF THE BIRD, as we have stated.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Supra 63b.');"><sup>2</sup></span> FOR THE PRESENTING: for it is written, And he shall bring it near [i.e., present it] unto the altar.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lev. II, 8. It was stated supra ');"><sup>3</sup></span>
הגשות דכתיב (ויקרא ב, ח) והגישה אל (פני) המזבח שירי הדם דכתיב (ויקרא ד, ז) ואת כל דם הפר ישפוך אל יסוד המזבח:
FOR THE RESIDUE OF THE BLOOD: for it is written, And all the remaining blood thereof shall he pour out at the base of the altar.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Ibid. IV, 30. It is stated supra ');"><sup>4</sup></span> ABOVE: FOR THE POURING OF THE WINE AND THE WATER, AND FOR THE BURNT-OFFERING OF A BIRD WHEN THE EAST WAS TOO MUCH OCCUPIED.
מלמעלה ניסוך המים והיין ועולת העוף כשהיא רבה במזרח: מ"ט רבי יוחנן אמר מפני שקרובה מבית הדשן
What is the reason?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' This implies that the proper place for the burnt-offering of a bird was the east; what then was the reason for this?');"><sup>5</sup></span> - R'Johanan said: Because it is nearest to the ash deposit.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The ashes which were placed every morning by the side of the altar, to the east of the ascent.');"><sup>6</sup></span>
אמר רבי יוחנן בא וראה כמה גדול כחן של כהנים שאין לך קל בעופות יותר ממוראה ונוצה פעמים שהכהן זורקן יותר מבשלשים אמה
R'Johanan said: Come and see how great was the strength of the priests, for no part of birds is lighter than the crop and the feathers, yet sometimes the priest threw them more than thirty cubits.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' When the bird was sacrificed by the south-west horn, he had to throw the crop and the feathers to the ash deposit, more than thirty cubits away. It requires great strength to throw anything that is very light a great distance,');"><sup>7</sup></span> For we learnt: He<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The priest who removed the ashes.');"><sup>8</sup></span>
דתנן נטל מחתה של כסף ועלה לראש המזבח ופינה את הגחלים אילך ואילך וחתה מן המאוכלות הפנימיות ויורד הגיע לרצפה מחזיר פניו כלפי צפון והולך למזרחו של כבש כעשר אמות צבר את הגחלים על גבי הרצפה רחוק מן הכבש שלשה טפחים מקום שנותנין מוראה ונוצה ודישון מזבח הפנימי והמנורה
took a silver pan [brazier] and ascended to the top of the altar, where he parted the coals to either side, [and] shovelled out some of the inner burnt coals; then he descended and reached the pavement. He turned his face toward the north, proceeded to the east of the ascent, a distance of ten cubits.
הני טפי מתלתין וחד הויין מקום גברי לא חשיב:
There he heaped up the coals on the pavement three handbreadths away from the slope, at the site where they placed the crop and the feathers and the ashes of the inner altar and the candlestick.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' V. Tam. I, 4.');"><sup>9</sup></span> But this would be more than thirty-one [cubits]?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Rashi gives the exact calculation.');"><sup>10</sup></span>
כל העולים למזבח: מ"ט אמר רבי יוחנן נסכים שמא יתעשנו ועולת העוף שמא תמות בעשן
- He does not count the place of the person.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' That itself is responsible for one cubit.');"><sup>11</sup></span> ALL WHO ASCENDED THE ALTAR etc. What is the reason?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Why were these different?');"><sup>12</sup></span>
ורמינהו בא לו להקיף את המזבח מאין הוא מתחיל מקרן דרומית מזרחית מזרחית צפונית צפונית מערבית מערבית דרומית ונותנין לו יין לנסך
- Said R'Johanan: In the case of libations,lest they become smoke-laden; and as to the burnt-offering of a bird, lest it perish through the smoke.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Of the burning wood and limbs. Hence the shortest route was taken.');"><sup>13</sup></span> An objection is raised: When he came to make a circuit of the altar,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' This refers to the High Priest, v. Tam. VII, 3.');"><sup>14</sup></span>

whence did he commence? From the south-east horn, [whence he successively passed to] the north-east, north-west, and south-west, and he was handed the wine to pour it out!<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' On to the altar.
