ולא עוד אלא שגורם לשכינה שתסתלק מישראל שנאמר (איוב יח, ד) ויעתק צור ממקומו ואין צור אלא הקב"ה שנאמר (דברים לב, יח) צור ילדך תשי
More than that, he causes the Shekinah to depart from Israel ; as it is said, "Shall the Rock be removed out of its place?" (ibid.) "Rock" means nothing else than the Holy One, blessed be He; as it is said, "Of the Rock that begat thee thou wast unmindful" (Deut. xxxii. 18). [[fol. 6 a.]]

Synagogues in Babylon were usually situated in a field, near a river, at some distance from the town. See J. E. xi. p. 623, Schurer, II. ii. p. 69. It was because of the danger of being attacked by footpads if alone that this regulation was made.
