הניחא אי סבר לה כר' יוחנן הוא נמי מתרץ לה כר' יוחנן אלא אי סבר כר"ל היכי מתרץ לה על כרחך כר' יוחנן ס"ל

It would be alright if he would hold like R. Yohanan, [for] he could [then] resolve it like R. Yohanan. But if he holds like Resh Lakish how can he resolve it? Therefore you must say that he holds like R. Johanan.
