אמר אביי בא עליה ומתה פטור שנאמר (דברים כב, יט) ונתן לאבי הנערה ולא לאבי מתה מלתא דפשיטא ליה לאביי מיבעיא ליה לרבא

Abaye said: If he had intercourse with her and she died, he is exempt [from the fine], as it says, “Then he shall give to the girl’s father” (Deuteronomy 22:29) but not to the father of a deceased girl. The ruling which was so obvious to Abaye was part of a question asked by Rava.
