מחצה על מחצה ישראל למאי הלכתא אמר ריש לקיש לנזקין ה"ד אי נימא דנגחיה תורא דידן לתורא דידיה לימא ליה אייתי ראיה דישראל את ושקול

If [the inhabitants of the town are] half and half [the child is] Jewish: For what practical purpose [is this taught]? Resh Lakish said: With regard to damages. What is the exact case? If it was an ox of ours that gored an ox of his? [In this case] let him say to him: “Bring evidence that you are an Israelite — and take!”
