Reference for Ketubot 39:5

א"ר אבהו אין מזימין את העדים אלא בפניהן ומכחישין את העדים שלא בפניהן והזמה שלא בפניהן נהי דהזמה לא הוי הכחשה מיהא הויא

Abbahu said: They rebut witnesses only in their presence, but they contradict them also in not in their presence. And a rebuttal in their absence — granted that it does not count as rebuttal, but it does count as contradiction.
