to be the first to commence [the reading of the Law],<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' In ancient times the public reading of the Law was done by those 'called up'. The priest was to be called to read the first portion. v. Git. 59a. ');"><sup>1</sup></span> the first to pronounce the blessing,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., the blessing for bread prior to the meal, and grace after the meal. ');"><sup>2</sup></span>
