(איכה א, א) היתה כאלמנה אמר רב יהודה אמר רב כאלמנה ולא אלמנה ממש אלא כאשה שהלך בעלה למדינת הים ודעתו לחזור אליה רבתי בגוים שרתי במדינות אמר רבא אמר רבי יוחנן כל מקום שהן הולכין נעשין שרים לאדוניהן

R. Johanan said: Why were they smitten with an alphabetical dirge?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lamentations is written in the form of an alphabetical acrostic. ');">²⁸</span> Because they violated the Torah, which was given by means of the alphabet.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., its words are formed from the alphabet.
