ר"ש אומר אמר הקב"ה וכו': לימא בדר' אבין א"ר אילעא קמיפלגי דא"ר אבין א"ר אילעא כל מקום שאתה מוצא כלל בעשה ופרט בלא תעשה אין דנין אותו בכלל ופרט

Why so? Because it says [in reference thereto], and thou shalt burn with fire the city and all the spoil thereof every whit.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Deut. XIII, 17. ');"><sup>7</sup></span> But if it contains a single <i>mezuzah</i>, this is impossible, because it is written, Ye shall not so do unto the Lord your God.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Ibid. XII, 4, referring back to the preceding verse, And ye shall destroy the name of them, i.e., the idols; hence in his view the whole law of a condemned city does not apply if it contains sacred writings. ');"><sup>8</sup></span>
