מנינא דרישא למעוטי מאי ומנינא דסיפא למעוטי מאי

— If FROM THE LEVIRATE MARRIAGE only had been stated it might have been assumed that she must perform <i>halizah</i><span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' In order that the law of the levirate marriage be not entirely abrogated. ');"><sup>34</sup></span> though she is exempt from the levirate marriage, hence it was taught<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' By the use of the expression, exempt'. ');"><sup>35</sup></span> that whoever is subject<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lit., 'goes up' sc. to the gate, i.e., the court (cf. Deut. XXV, 7.) If nothing were to be excluded, there would be no need for the addition of a cardinal at the beginning, or of a reference to it at the end of a list which presumably enumerated all possible cases.
