והכתיב (שמות לח, ד) תחת כרכובו מלמטה עד חציו אמר רב נחמן בר יצחק תרי הוו חד לנוי וחד לכהנים דלא נשתרקו

Not because it was [now] fit for service, but that it should not appear damaged, for every altar which lacks<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' This includes the case where they are damaged.');">¹⁸</span> a horn, ascent, base and squareness is invalid.
