שנאמר (נחמיה ט, ה) קומו ברכו את ה' אלהיכם מן העולם עד העולם ויברכו שם כבודך ומרומם על כל ברכה ותהלה יכול על כל ברכות כולן לא תהא אלא תהלה אחת ת"ל ומרומם על כל ברכה ותהלה על כל ברכה תן לו תהלה

[in which the congregation responds, Amen] holds good for the country generally but not for the Temple, because the response, Amen' is not made use of in the Temple.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' [No satisfactory reason has so far been given for this regulation. Graetz, MGWJ 1872 pp. 492ff suggests that this does not mean that the response, Amen, was not allowed in the Temple, but that the solemnity of the service, heightened by the pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton as written, demanded a more extensive and impressive formula. XXXIX, p. 188.]');"><sup>6</sup></span> And whence can it be adduced that the response, Amen, was not made use of in the Temple? - For it is said, Stand up and bless the Lord your God from everlasting to everlasting; and and let them say: Blessed be Thy glorious Name, that is exalted above all blessing and praise.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Neh. IX, 5.');"><sup>7</sup></span> You might have thought that there shall be only one form, of praise after all Benedictions, therefore the text adds, 'Exalted above all blessing and praise'; that is to say, Give him 'praise' after every blessing.'

Tosefta Berakhot

The Beracha (blessing) of Zimun is from the Torah (i.e. a Torah obligation) as it is said, “And you should eat, and be satisfied, and bless…” (Deuteronomy 8:10), this is [a reference to] the Beracha of Zimun. “… Hashem, your God …” (Deuteronomy 8:10), this is [a reference to] the first Beracha [of Birkat Hamazon (Grace After Meals)]. “… for the land …” (Deuteronomy 8:10), this is [a reference to] the Beracha about the land (i.e. the second Beracha) [of Birkat Hamazon]. “… the good …” (Deuteronomy 8:10), this is [a reference to the Beracha about] Jerusalem (i.e. the third Beracha) [of Birkat Hamazon] as it is said “… this good mountain and Levanon.” (Deuteronomy 3:25). “… which He has given you.” (Deuteronomy 8:10), this is [a reference to the Beracha of] Hatov Vehameitiv (The Good and Who does good) (i.e. the fourth Beracha) [of Birkat Hamazon].
