כדריש לקיש דאמר ריש לקיש כל מקום שאתה מוצא עשה ולא תעשה אם אתה יכול לקיים את שניהם מוטב ואם לאו יבוא עשה וידחה את לא תעשה

well and good, otherwise let the positive precept come and override the negative one. Q. Is it proper to wear zizith (fringes) made of flax?
A. No, flaxen zizith are permitted to be worn only with a flaxen talith. But since it is not proper to wear a flaxen talith (cloak), one must never wear flaxen zizith.
