ולמה מתכסין בשקים אמר ר' חייא בר אבא לומר הרי אנו חשובין כבהמה ולמה נותנין אפר מקלה על גבי תיבה אמר רבי יהודה בן פזי כלומר (תהלים צא, טו) עמו אנכי בצרה ריש לקיש אמר (ישעיהו סג, ט) בכל צרתם לו צר אמר ר' זירא מריש כי הוה חזינא להו לרבנן דיהבי אפר מקלה על גבי תיבה מזדעזע לי כוליה גופאי
And why do they place wood-ashes upon the Ark? - R'Judah B'Pazzi said: As if to say, I will be with him in trouble.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Ps. XCI, 15.');"><sup>4</sup></span> Resh Lakish said: [As if to say] In all their afflictions He was afflicted.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Isa. LXIII, 9.
