Chapter 66

א אמר ליה רבינא לרבא הלכתא מאי אמר ליה כי קידוש מה קידוש אף על גב דמקדש בצלותא מקדש אכסא אף הבדלה נמי אע"ג דמבדיל בצלותא מבדיל אכסא:
1  Rabina asked Raba : What is the Halakah [if one pronounced the "Division" in the Tefillah, must he say it over the cup of wine] ? He replied : It is like the Sanctification ; although one sanctifies [the Sabbath] in the Tefillah, he must do so over the cup of wine; so also with the Habdalah, although he said it in the Tefillah, he must do so over the cup of wine.
ב ר' אליעזר אומר בהודאה:
2 R. Eliezer said : [It is to he included] in the "Thanksgiving"
ג ר' זירא הוה רכיב חמרא הוה קא שקיל ואזיל ר' חייא בר אבין בתריה אמר ליה ודאי דאמריתו משמיה דר' יוחנן הלכה כר' אליעזר ביום טוב שחל להיות אחר השבת אמר ליה אין
3 R. Zera was riding on an ass, and R. Hiyya b. Abin was following him. He said to him, "Is it really so as thou didst state in the name of R. Johanan : The Halakah is in agreement with R. Eliezer on a Festival which occurs on the conclusion of the Sabbath ?" He replied, "Yes."
ד הלכה מכלל דפליגי
4 "The Halakah being so, is it to be inferred that there are some who differ from him?
ה ולא פליגי והא פליגי רבנן
5  Are there not, indeed, some who differ?" "The Rabbis differ from him."
ו אימר דפליגי רבנן בשאר ימות השנה ביום טוב שחל להיות אחר השבת מי פליגי
6 "On which point do the Rabbis differ?" "On the other days of the year." "Do they differ on the question of a Festival which occurs at the conclusion of the Sabbath?
ז והא פליג ר' עקיבא
7  Behold R. 'Akiba differs!"
ח אטו כל השנה כולה מי עבדינן כר' עקיבא דהשתא ניקו ונעביד כוותיה כל השנה כולה מאי טעמא לא עבדינן כרבי עקיבא דתמני סרי תקון תשסרי לא תקון הכא נמי שב תקון תמני לא תקון
8  "Do we, then, act in accordance with R. 'Akiba the whole year, that we should now agree and act in accord with his view? Why do we not act in agreement with R. 'Akiba the whole year? Because eighteen benedictions were instituted, not nineteen; and so here also, seven benedictions were instituted, not eight."
ט אמר ליה לאו הלכה אתמר אלא מטין אתמר
9  [R. Zera] said to him: It has not been reported that the Halakah [is in accord with R. Eliezer], but it has been reported that we incline [towards his view].
י דאתמר ר' יצחק בר אבדימי אמר משום רבינו הלכה ואמרי לה מטין
10  For it has been reported : Rab Isaac b. Abdemi said in the name of our teacher : The Halakah [is in accord with R. Eliezer] ; but some say : We incline [towards his view].
יא ר' יוחנן אמר מודים ור' חייא בר אבא אמר נראין
11  R. Johanan said : [The Rabbis] acknowledge [that the Halakah is in agreement with him]. R. Hiyya b. Abba said : [R. Eliezer's opinion] is probable.
יב אמר ר' זירא נקוט דרבי חייא בר אבא בידך דדייק וגמר שמעתא מפומא דמרה שפיר כרחבא דפומבדיתא
12  R. Zera said : Take the statement of R. Hiyya. b. Abba in thine hand, because he is most careful to report a teaching exactly as it issued from the mouth of his teacher ; like Rahba of Pombedita.
יג דאמר רחבא אמר ר' יהודה הר הבית סטיו כפול היה והיה סטיו לפנים מסטיו
13 For Rahba said in the name of R. Judah : The Temple mount was a double colonnade, and it was a colonnade within a colonnade.
יד אמר רב יוסף אנא לא האי ידענא ולא האי ידענא אלא מדרב ושמואל ידענא דתקינו לן מרגניתא בבבל
14 Rab Joseph said : I know neither the one nor the other ; but from Rab and Samuel I know that they instituted a "pearl" for us in Babylon :
טו ותודיענו ה' אלהינו את משפטי צדקך ותלמדנו לעשות חקי רצונך ותנחילנו זמני ששון וחגי נדבה ותורישנו קדושת שבת וכבוד מועד וחגיגת הרגל בין קדושת שבת לקדושת יום טוב הבדלת ואת יום השביעי מששת ימי המעשה קדשת הבדלת וקדשת את עמך ישראל בקדושתך ותתן לנו וכו':
15 "Thou, O Lord our God, hast made known unto us the judgments of Thy righteousness ; Thou hast taught us to perform the statutes of Thy will. Thou hast caused us to inherit seasons of joy and feasts of free will gifts, and hast given us as an heritage the holiness of the Sabbath, the glory of the appointed time, and the celebration of the festival. Thou hast made a distinction between the holiness of the Sabbath and that of the festival, and hast hallowed the seventh day above the six working days ; Thou hast distinguished and sanctified Thy people Israel by Thy holiness. And Thou hast given us," etc.
טז <big><strong>מתני׳</strong></big> האומר על קן צפור יגיעו רחמיך ועל טוב יזכר שמך מודים מודים משתקין אותו:
16 MISHNAH Whoever says [in his Tefillah] "To a bird's nest do Thy mercies extend" or "For the good be Thy name remembered" or "We give thanks, we give thanks," him do we silence.
יז <big><strong>גמ׳</strong></big> בשלמא מודים מודים משתקין אותו משום דמיחזי כשתי רשויות ועל טוב יזכר שמך נמי משמע על הטובה ולא על הרעה ותנן חייב אדם לברך על הרעה כשם שמברך על הטובה אלא על קן צפור יגיעו רחמיך מ"ט
17 GEMARA It is right that we silence him who says, "We give thanks, we give thanks," because he makes it appear as though there were two Powers; and likewise him who says, "For the good be Thy name remembered," the inference being that for the good [may it be remembered] but not for the bad ; and we have a Mishnaic teaching : A man is in duty bound to utter a benediction for the bad even as he utters one for the good. But why [do we silence him who says], "To a bird's nest do Thy mercies extend"?
יח פליגי בה תרי אמוראי במערבא רבי יוסי בר אבין ורבי יוסי בר זבידא חד אמר מפני שמטיל קנאה במעשה בראשית וחד אמר מפני שעושה מדותיו של הקדוש ברוך הוא רחמים ואינן אלא גזרות
18  Two Amoraim in the West differ, viz. : R Jose b. Abin and R. Jose b. Zebida : one said : Because he causes jealousy between God's creatures ; the other said : Because he makes the ordinances of the Holy One, blessed be He, to be simply acts of mercy, whereas they are injunctions.
יט ההוא דנחית קמיה דרבה ואמר אתה חסת על קן צפור אתה חוס ורחם עלינו אמר רבה כמה ידע האי צורבא מרבנן לרצויי למריה א"ל אביי והא משתקין אותו תנן
19 A certain man went down [to the Ark] in the presence of Rabbah and said, "Thou hast compassion on a bird's nest ; do Thou have compassion and mercy upon us." Rabbah exclaimed, "How this Rabbinical scholar knows how to find favour with his Lord!" Abbai said to him, "Lo, we have learnt in the Mishnah: We silence him!"
כ ורבה נמי לחדודי לאביי הוא דבעי
20 But Rabbah merely wished to test Abbai.
כא ההוא דנחית קמיה דר' חנינא אמר האל הגדול הגבור והנורא והאדיר והעזוז והיראוי החזק והאמיץ והודאי והנכבד
21 A certain man went down [to the Ark] in the presence of R. Hannina. He said, "O God, the great, the mighty, the revered, the glorious, the powerful, the feared, the strong, the courageous, the certain, the honoured."
כב המתין לו עד דסיים כי סיים א"ל סיימתינהו לכולהו שבחי דמרך למה לי כולי האי אנן הני תלת דאמרינן אי לאו דאמרינהו משה רבינו באורייתא ואתו אנשי כנסת הגדולה ותקנינהו בתפלה לא הוינן יכולין למימר להו ואת אמרת כולי האי ואזלת משל למלך בשר ודם שהיו לו אלף אלפים דינרי זהב והיו מקלסין אותו בשל כסף והלא גנאי הוא לו:
22 R. Hannina waited until he had finished. When he had finished, he said to him, "Hast thou exhausted all the praises of thy Lord? What is the use of all those [adjectives]? The three which we do say, if Moses our teacher had not used them in the Torah and the men of the Great Assembly come and instituted them in the Tefillah, we should not have been able to say ; and thou dost go on saying all those!" A parable : [It may be likened] to a human king who possessed a million golden denarii, and people kept praising him as the possessor of [a million denarii of] silver; is it not an insult to him ?
כג ואמר רבי חנינא הכל בידי שמים חוץ מיראת שמים שנאמר (דברים י, יב) ועתה ישראל מה ה' אלהיך שואל מעמך כי אם ליראה
23 R. Hannina also said : Everything is in the hand of Heaven except the fear of Heaven; as it is said, "And now, O Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee but to fear" (Deut. x. 12).
כד אטו יראת שמים מילתא זוטרתא היא והא"ר חנינא משום ר' שמעון בן יוחי אין לו להקב"ה בבית גנזיו אלא אוצר של יראת שמים שנאמר (ישעיהו לג, ו) יראת ה' היא אוצרו
24  Is, then, the fear of Heaven a small thing? Lo, R. Hannina has said in the name of R. Simeon b. Johai : The Holy One, blessed be He, has in His treasury nothing but the store of heavenly fear; as it is said, "And the fear of the Lord which is His treasure" (Is. xxxiii. 6) !
כה אין לגבי משה מילתא זוטרתא היא דאמר ר' חנינא משל לאדם שמבקשים ממנו כלי גדול ויש לו דומה עליו ככלי קטן קטן ואין לו דומה עליו ככלי גדול:
25  Yes, in the estimation of Moses it was a small thing ; for R. Hannina said : A parable : [It may be likened] to a man from whom a large vessel is required ; possessing it, it seems to him small ; but if he does not possess it, though it be small, it seems to him large.
כו מודים מודים משתקין אותו:
26 [ Who says], "We give thanks," him do we silence.
כז אמר ר' זירא כל האומר שמע שמע כאומר מודים מודים דמי
27 R. Zera said : Whoever says Shema', Shema' is like him who says "We give thanks, we give thanks" [and is to be silenced].
כח מיתיבי הקורא את שמע וכופלה הרי זה מגונה מגונה הוא דהוי שתוקי לא משתקינן ליה
28 Against this is quoted : He who reads the Shema' and repeats the words is to be reprimanded. He is to be reprimanded, but not silenced !
כט לא קשיא הא דאמר מילתא מילתא ותני לה והא דאמר פסוקא פסוקא ותני ליה
29  There is no contradiction. This refers to one who repeats it word by word ; but the former refers to him who repeats it verse by verse.
ל אמר ליה רב פפא לאביי ודילמא מעיקרא לא כוון דעתיה ולבסוף כוון דעתיה
30 Rab Pappa asked Abbai : But perhaps he at first did not direct his mind and finally did so!
לא אמר ליה
31 He replied :
