Chapter 93

א ואמר רבא
1 Raba further said: If two cysts are contiguous, no examination thereof can avail.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Raba is of the opinion that where two or more cysts are contiguous they must have been caused by an underlying perforation.');"><sup>1</sup></span>
ב הני תרתי בועי דסמיכי להדדי לית להו בדיקותא
2 If one cyst appears like two,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., there appears a dividing line in the cyst. tnut vbut');"><sup>2</sup></span>
ג חדא ומתחזיא כתרתי מייתינן סילוא ובזעינן לה
3 we must take a thorn and burst it; if [the mucous] runs from one into the other, it is clear that there i here only one cyst, and it is permitted, but if not, there are here two distinct cysts [which are contiguous], and it is trefah.
ד אי שפכן להדדי חדא היא וכשרה ואי לא תרתי נינהו וטרפה
4 Raba further said: The lungs have five lobes,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' This does not take into account the main or diaphragmatic lobe which in Hebrew is , as distinguished from , the other lobes.');"><sup>3</sup></span>
ה ואמר רבא
5 three on the right side and two on the left [that is, when hel up with] the front facing the examiner.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., when the animal is suspended after the slaughtering by its hind legs ventrally towards-the examiner.');"><sup>4</sup></span>
ו ה' אוני אית לה לריאה אפה כלפי גברא תלתא מימינא ותרתי משמאלא
6 If there was one lobe missing or one too many, or if the number of lobes was transposed,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., there were two lobes on the right side and three on the left.');"><sup>5</sup></span>
ז חסיר או יתיר או חליף טרפה
7 the animal is trefah.
ח ההוא יתירתא דאתאי לקמיה דמרימר
8 There once was brought before Meremar [a pair of lungs with] an additional lobe.
ט הוה יתיב רב אחא אבבא א"ל
9 R'Aha who was sitting at the entrance [of Meremar's house] asked [the butcher as he was leaving], 'What did he say about it'?
י מאי אמר לך
10 He replied: 'He declared it to be permitted'.'
יא א"ל
11 Then take it in to him again', said R'Aha.
יב אכשרה ניהלה
12 Whereupon Meremar said: 'Go, tell him that sits at the door that the law is not in accordance with Raba in the case of an addition lobe'.
יג א"ל
13 This is the rule, however, only if the additional lobe was in line with the other lobes, but if it was interjacent between the lungs,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Or anywhere else on the lungs not in line with or in the range of the other lobes.');"><sup>6</sup></span>
יד הדר עיילה קמיה
14 it is trefah.

15 There once was brought before R'Ashi [a pair of lungs that had] an interjacent lobe.
טז זיל אימא ליה למאן דיתיב אבבא לית הלכתא כוותיה דרבא ביתרת
16 He was about to declare it trefah when R'Huna Mar B'Awia said to him, But all beasts that pasture in the open field have this<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' MS.M. and a number of other MSS. add: 'And others say: All goats that pasture in the open field have it'. V. Tosaf. ad loc.');"><sup>7</sup></span>
יז והני מילי דקיימא בדרא דאוני אבל ביני ביני טרפה
17 [interjacent lobe], and it is called by butchers 'the little rose-lobe',<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' So called on account of its thinness like the petal of a rose, and also because of its pinkish colour.');"><sup>8</sup></span>
יח ההוא ביני ביני דאתא לקמיה דרב אשי סבר רב אשי למיטרפה
18 This is the rule, however, only if it found in front,
