If that of the [red] cow - Eleazar is written in connection therewith?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Num. XIX, 4: and Eleazar shall . . sprinkle of her blood. Eleazar was the vice High Priest, and this shews that even all other male priests are excluded; surely it is superfluous to state that women are debarred!');"><sup>2</sup></span> If [that sprinkled] on the inner precincts [of the Temple],<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The sprinkling on the veil and on the golden altar, mentioned in particular cases.');"><sup>3</sup></span> is but the anointed priest is stated in connection therewith!<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lev. IV, 5f: And the priest that is anointed shall take of the bullock's blood. . and sprinkled of the blood . . before the veil of the sanctuary. The difficulty is as explained in the previous note.');"><sup>4</sup></span>

דאתיא בק"ו מבן צאן ומה בן צאן שלא קבע לו כהן לשחיטתו קבע לו כהן להזאתו בן עוף שקבע לו כהן למליקתו אינו דין שיקבע לו להזאתו

- But it refers to the sprinkling of a bird's [blood], which is inferred a minori from a animal:<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lit., 'a young of the herd'.');"><sup>5</sup></span> if an animal, for the slaughtering of which a priest was not specified,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' An Israelite too may slaughter it, for it is written: And he shall kill the bullock before the Lord: and the priests . . shall bring (i.e., receive) t blood - Lev. I, 5. Hence priests are required only from the reception of the blood and onward, but not for the actual slaughtering.');"><sup>6</sup></span> yet a priest was specified for its sprinkling; then a fowl, for the wringing of whose neck a priest was appointed,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Ibid. I, 15. Wringing the neck of a fowl is the equivalent of slaughtering an animal.');"><sup>7</sup></span>

חוץ ממנחת סוטה ונזירה א"ל רבי אליעזר לרבי יאשיה דדריה לא תיתיב אכרעך עד דאמרת לי להא שמעתתא מנין למנחת סוטה שטעונה תנופה מנלן בגופה כתיב (במדבר ה, כה) והניף את המנחה אלא תנופה בבעלים מנלן

it surely follows that one [a priest] is specified for its sprinkling!<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' And then the analogy between wringing and burning (supra ');"><sup>8</sup></span> EXCEPTING THE MEAL-OFFERING OF A SOTAH AND A NEZIRAH. R'Eleazar said to R'Josiah his contemporary:<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' R. Eleazar was an Amora of the third century. There was a Tanna of the second century named R. Josiah, and Rashi assumes that he was still living when R. Eleazar made the following remark; hence the Talmud observes that R. Josiah referred to here was the Amora, his contemporary, not the Tanna. rnt');"><sup>9</sup></span>

אתיא יד יד משלמים כתיב הכא (במדבר ה, כה) ולקח הכהן מיד האשה וכתיב התם (ויקרא ז, ל) ידיו תביאנה

Do not sit down on your haunches<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., do not sit down at all (Tosaf. Naz.24b, s.v.) v. Nazir (Sonc. ed.) p. 87, n. 9.');"><sup>10</sup></span> until you have told me this law: How do we know that the meal. offering of a sotah requires waving?

מה כאן כהן אף להלן כהן מה להלן בעלים אף כאן בעלים הא כיצד כהן מכניס ידו תחת יד בעלים ומניף

[You ask,] 'How do we know!' it is written in the very section, and he shall wave the offering [before the Lord].<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Num. V, 25; the reference is to sotah.');"><sup>11</sup></span> But [the question is,] how do we know that the waving must be by the owner?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., by the woman herself.');"><sup>12</sup></span> - The meaning of 'hand' is deduced from a peace-offering.

אשכחן סוטה נזירה מנלן אתיא כף כף מסוטה

Here is written: Then the priest shall take [the jealousy- offering] out of the woman's hand:<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Num. V, 25; the reference is to sotah.');"><sup>11</sup></span> while there [in reference to peace-offerings] it is written, his hands [sc. the owner's] shall bring [the offerings of the Lord made by fire]:<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lev. VII, 30.');"><sup>13</sup></span> just as here the priest [is stated], so there too the priest [is meant]; and just as there the owner [is specifi so here too the owner [is required].

<big><strong>מתני׳</strong></big> כל מצוה שהיא תלויה בארץ אינה נוהגת אלא בארץ ושאינה תלויה בארץ נוהגת בין בארץ בין בחוצה לארץ

How so? The priest inserts his hand under the owner's and waves. We have found [this in the case of] sotah; how do we know [it of] a nezirah? - The meaning of 'palm' [kaf] is derived from sotah.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Sotah, Num. V, 18: and he (the priest) shall put the offering of memorial in her palms (E.V. hands) ; nazir, (and the same applies to a nezirah) , ib. VI, 19: and he (the priest) shall put them upon the palms (E.V. hands) of the Nazirite. The employment of 'palm' in both cases teaches that their provisions are identical.');"><sup>14</sup></span> <big><b>MISHNAH: </b></big>EVERY PRECEPT WHICH IS DEPENDENT ON THE LAND IS PRACTISED ONLY IN THE LAND [PALESTINE]; AND THAT WHICH IS NOT DEPENDENT ON THE LAND IS PRACTISED BOTH WITHIN AND WITHOUT THE LAND [IN THE DIASPORA],<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The Gemara explains the meaning of 'DEPENDENT' and 'NOT DEPENDENT'.');"><sup>15</sup></span>
