לא קא מיבעיא לי כי קא מבעיא לי לאו דכליל תהיה מאי
I have no doubt at all;<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The priest is certainly liable on account of the prohibition (Lev. XXII, 10) There shall no non-priest eat of the holy thing, for in regard to the portions that are to be burnt upon the altar the priest is in the same category as a non-priest.');"><sup>1</sup></span> I ask the question only as regards the precept 'It shall be wholly burnt'.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Does this precept, which is stated in connection with the meal-offering, apply to all offerings which are to be burnt or not?');"><sup>2</sup></span> How is it then? - Said R'Aaron to Rabina, Come and hear: For it was taught: R'Eliezer says, The precept 'It shall be wholly burnt', wherever it applies, imports also a prohibition against eating.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' V. Mak. 18b. Hence the priest is liable on account of this prohibition too.');"><sup>3</sup></span>
אמר רב אהרן לרבינא תא שמע דתניא ר' אליעזר אומר כל שהוא (ויקרא ו, טז) בכליל תהיה ליתן לא תעשה על אכילתו:
<big><b>MISHNAH: </b></big>THE MEAL-OFFERING OF THE PRIESTS,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Whether brought as a freewill or obligatory offering.');"><sup>4</sup></span> THE MEAL-OFFERING OF THE ANOINTED HIGH PRIEST, AND THE MEAL-OFFERING THAT IS OFFERED WITH THE DRINK-OFFERINGS ARE [WHOLLY] FOR THE ALTAR AND THE PRIESTS HAVE NO SHARE IN THEM; WITH THESE THE ALTAR IS MORE PRIVILEGED THAN THE PRIESTS. THE TWO LOAVES AND THE SHEWBREAD ARE EATEN BY THE PRIESTS AND THE ALTAR HAS NO SHARE IN THEM; WITH THESE THE PRIESTS ARE MORE PRIVILEGED THAN THE ALTAR'<big><b>GEMARA:</b></big>
<big><strong>מתני׳</strong></big> מנחת כהנים ומנחת כהן משיח ומנחת נסכים למזבח ואין בהן לכהנים ובזה יפה כח מזבח מכח הכהנים שתי הלחם ולחם הפנים נאכלין לכהנים ואין בהם למזבח ובזה יפה כח הכהנים מכח המזבח:
Are there no other cases?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Of offerings wholly consumed by the altar and in which the priests have no share.');"><sup>5</sup></span> But what about the burnt-offering? - There is the hide thereof which belongs to the priests. And what about the burnt-offering of a bird? -There are the crop and the feathers thereof.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Which are cast away and not offered; thus the offering is not wholly burnt upon the altar.');"><sup>6</sup></span>
<big><strong>גמ׳</strong></big> ותו ליכא והא איכא עולה איכא עורה לכהנים והא איכא עולת העוף איכא מוראה ונוצה והא איכא נסכים לשיתין אזלי
And what about the drink-offerings? - They flow down into the pits.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' These were the pits under the altar into which the wine flowed after the libation; v. Suk. 49a. The drink-offerings therefore cannot be said to be consumed by the altar.');"><sup>7</sup></span> What then does WITH THESE' [signify]?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Seeing that we know of no exceptions to the rule.');"><sup>8</sup></span> [It is] to exclude Samuel's ruling.
ומאי בזו לאפוקי מדשמואל דאמר שמואל המתנדב יין מביאו ומזלפו על גבי אישים קמ"ל דלשיתין אזלי
For Samuel stated:<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Zeb. 91b. Samuel distinguishes between an offering of wine and of oil, since from the latter the handful can be taken but not from the former.');"><sup>9</sup></span> If a man makes a freewill-offering of wine, he must bring it and it is poured on the altar fire; [our Mishnah] therefore teaches us that it is poured into the pits. [Our Mishnah], however, supports [the other ruling of] Samuel, for Samuel stated,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' V. p. 443, n. 9.');"><sup>10</sup></span>
מסייע ליה לשמואל דאמר שמואל המתנדב שמן קומצו ושיריו נאכלין:
If a man makes a freewill-offering of oil, the handful must be taken from it [and burnt upon the altar], and the remainder is eaten by the priests. THE TWO LOAVES AND THE SHEWBREAD. Are there no other cases?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Of offerings which are wholly consumed by the priests and in which the altar has no share.');"><sup>11</sup></span>
שתי הלחם ולחם הפנים: ותו ליכא והא איכא חטאת העוף איכא דמה
But what about the sin-offering of a bird? -There is the blood thereof [which was sprinkled upon the side of the altar]. And what about the log of oil of the leper? -There are the sprinklings.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Sc. the seven sprinklings of the oil towards the curtain. Hence it was not wholly consumed by the priests. Aliter: the application of the oil to the ear etc. of the leper.');"><sup>12</sup></span> What does 'WITH THESE' [signify]?
והאיכא לוג שמן של מצורע איכא מתנותיו
[It is] to exclude the view of him who says that the Two Loaves, if brought alone,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' When the two lambs of Pentecost were not available, v. supra p.280.');"><sup>13</sup></span> must be burnt; our [Mishnah] therefore teaches us that with these the priests are always privileged.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' For the Two Loaves are in all circumstances eaten by the priests.');"><sup>14</sup></span> <big><b>MISHNAH: </b></big>ALL MEAL-OFFERINGS THAT ARE PREPARED IN A VESSEL<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., those prepared in a special vessel, as the griddle and the pan, but excluding those baked in the oven. V. GEMARA:');"><sup>15</sup></span>
ומאי בזו לאפוקי ממאן דאמר שתי הלחם הבאות בפני עצמן לשריפה אתיין קמשמע לן דבזו יפה כח כהנים לעולם:
REQUIRE THREE APPLICATIONS OF OIL BEFORE THEY ARE MADE READY, VIZ. , POURING, MINGLING AND PUTTING IN.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The manner of its preparation was this: some oil was first put in a vessel of ministry, the flour was then put in and the two were kneaded together. Later more oil was added which was mingled with the dough. It was then baked into a cake whereupon it was broken into pieces and again more oil was poured on it, and then the handful was taken from it.');"><sup>16</sup></span> THE [BAKED] CAKES<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Of the meal-offering prepared on a griddle or that prepared in a pan or that baked in an oven.');"><sup>17</sup></span> WERE MINGLED<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The prescribed mingling had to be performed after the meal-offering had been baked and broken into pieces.');"><sup>18</sup></span>

HOW WERE THEY ANOINTED? IN THE FORM OF CHI.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' In the form of a cross like the Greek letter . V. Tosaf. infra 75a, s.v. , where various other suggestions are made.');"><sup>21</sup></span> AND THE RESIDUE OF THE OIL WAS CONSUMED BY THE PRIESTS.
תנו רבנן (ויקרא ב, ז) ואם מנחת מרחשת קרבנך סלת בשמן תעשה מלמד שטעונה מתן שמן בכלי קרבנך קרבנך לגזירה שווה
<big><b>GEMARA: </b></big>What does it<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Sc. the expression 'THAT ARE PREPARED IN A VESSEL'.');"><sup>22</sup></span> exclude? - Said R'Papa, It excludes the meal-offering baked [in the oven].<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' This meal-offering had only two applications of oil, putting in and mingling, but not the third of pouring oil on it after it was baked.');"><sup>23</sup></span> Our Rabbis taught: And if thy offering be a meal-offering prepared in the pan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil:<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lev. II, 7. inac ,kx');"><sup>24</sup></span> this<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Sc. the expression ; lit., 'fine flour on the oil'.');"><sup>25</sup></span> signifies that it requires the putting in of oil in the vessel [at the outset]. [The expressions] 'thy offering' [used here and] 'thy offering' [used there]<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Ibid.5, with reference to the meal-offering prepared on a griddle.');"><sup>26</sup></span> establish an analogy:
