Pesachim 225:1
גזייתא נינהו דשמטי סוסיא ואתו דברי להו
the narrow paths [which they frequent], whence their horses bolt and come [into civilized places] bringing them along. Rab said to R'Assi: Do not dwell in a town in which no horses neigh or dogs bark.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' These guard the town: the dogs raise the alarm and the marauders are pursued on horseback.');"><sup>1</sup></span> And do not dwell in a town where the leader of the community is a physician.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' There seems to be no adequate reason for this. Possibly a doctor would be too busy to give proper attention to communal matters. R. Tam in tnh, tk hxt thxt B.B. ');"><sup>2</sup></span>
(וא"ל) רב לרב אסי לא תדור במתא דלא צניף בה סוסיא ולא נבח בה כלבא ואל תדור בעיר דריש מתא אסיא ולא תנסיב תרתי אי נסבת תרתי נסיב תלת
And do not marry two [women],<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lest they devise plots against you.');"><sup>3</sup></span> [but] if you do marry two, marry a third.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' She will reveal their designs.');"><sup>4</sup></span> Rab said to R'Kahana: Deal in carcases, but do not deal in words;<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Gossip or quibbling.');"><sup>5</sup></span>
א"ל רב לרב כהנא הפוך בנבילתא ולא תיפוך במילי פשוט נבילתא בשוקא ושקיל אגרא ולא תימא כהנא אנא וגברא רבא אנא וסניא בי מלתא סלקת לאיגרא שירותך בהדך מאה קרי במתא בזוזא תותי כנפיך ניהוו
flay carcases in the market place and earn wages and do not say, 'I am a priest and a great man and it is beneath my dignity.'<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The greatest man is not degraded by honest work.');"><sup>6</sup></span> [Even] if you [merely] ascend the roof, [take] victuals with you.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Do not undertake the least journey without provisions.');"><sup>7</sup></span> [Even] if a hundred pumpkins cost but a zuz in town, let them, be under your skirts.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Keep them in stock and do not wait to buy until you actually need them.');"><sup>8</sup></span>
א"ל רב לחייא בריה לא תשתי סמא ולא תשוור ניגרא ולא תעקר ככא ולא תקנא בחיויא ולא תקנא בארמאה
Rab said to his son Hiyya: Do not take drugs<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Even as a medicine, as they are habit forming.');"><sup>9</sup></span> and do not leap in great jumps;<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Or: do not jump over a brook - the strain affects the eyesight.');"><sup>10</sup></span> do not have a tooth extracted,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' When you have toothache - it will eventually cease in any case. [R. Hananel refers it to a molar tooth, the extraction of which affects the eyesight. Preuss, Biblisch - talmudische Medizin, p. 330, quotes Celsus: majore periculo in superioribus dentibus fit (extractio) , quia potest tempora oculosque concutere].');"><sup>11</sup></span>
תנו רבנן ג' אין מתקנאין בהן ואלו הן נכרי קטן ונחש קטן ותלמיד קטן מ"ט דמלכותייהו אחורי אודנייהו קאי
and do not provoke serpents and do not provoke a Syrian woman. Our Rabbis taught: Three must not be provoked, viz. : an insignificant Gentile,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lit., 'a little Gentile'.');"><sup>12</sup></span> a little snake, and a humble pupil.
א"ל רב לאיבו בריה טרחי בך בשמעתא ולא מסתייע מילתא תא אגמרך מילי דעלמא אדחלא אכרעיך זבינך זבין כל מילי זבין ותחרט בר מחמרא דזבין ולא תחרט
What is the reason? Because their kingdom stands behind their ears.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' They will grow up and take revenge. The particular expression may have been occasioned by Diocletian's rise to be Emperor of Rome though born of slaves - according to the Rabbis he was a swineherd originally. When Emperor he tried to avenge insults offered to him in his lowly position.');"><sup>13</sup></span> Rab said to his son Aibu: I have laboured over your studies but without success, [so] come and I will teach you worldly wisdom.
שרי כיסיך פתח שקיך קבא מארעא ולא כורא מאיגרא
Sell your wares while the sand is still on your feet.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Immediately you return from buying, sell.');"><sup>14</sup></span> Everything you may sell and regret,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' If the price advances - you might have received more.');"><sup>15</sup></span> except wine, which you can sell without regrets.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Had you waited it might have turned to vinegar.');"><sup>16</sup></span>
תמרא בחלוזך לבית סודנא רהיט ועד כמה אמר רבא עד תלתא סאה אמר רב פפא אי לא דרמאי שכרא לא איעתרי א"ד אמר רב חסדא אי לא דרמאי שכרא לא איעתרי מאי סודנא אמר רב חסדא סוד נאה וגמילות חסדים
Untie your purse and [then] open your sacks.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Pocket the money for a purchase before delivering it.');"><sup>17</sup></span> Better a kab from the ground than a kor from the roof.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Rather earn little near home than much far away.');"><sup>18</sup></span> When the dates are in your bag run to the brewery [beth sudna].<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' To brew beer of them - otherwise you may eat them.');"><sup>19</sup></span>
אמר רב פפא כל אגב גביא בעי כל אשראי ספק אתי ספק לא אתי ודאתי מעות רעות נינהו
And to what extent? - Said Raba: Up to three se'ahs. R'Papa said: If I were not a beer manufacturer I would not have become wealthy. Others say, R'Hisda said: If I were not a beer manufacturer, I would not have become wealthy.
ג' דברים א"ר יוחנן משום אנשי ירושלים כשאתה יוצא למלחמה אל תצא בראשונה אלא תצא באחרונה כדי שתכנס בראשונה ועשה שבתך חול ואל תצטרך לבריות והוי משתדל עם מי שהשעה משחקת לו
What is [the meaning of] sudna?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' That it is employed to denote a brewery.');"><sup>20</sup></span> Said R'Hisda: A pleasant secret [sod na'eh] and the exercise of charity.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' It is a pleasant secret - it is profitable and affords the means of charity.');"><sup>21</sup></span> R'Papa said: Every bill<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lit., 'everything on account (of which a bill or bond must be indited) .'');"><sup>22</sup></span>
(א"ר) שלשה דברים א"ר יהושע בן לוי משום אנשי ירושלים אל תרבה בגנות משום מעשה שהיה בתך בגרה שחרר עבדך ותן לה והוי זהיר באשתך מחתנה הראשון מ"ט רב חסדא אמר משום ערוה רב כהנא אמר משום ממון הא והא איתנהו
requires collecting;<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Do not be certain of the money until you have actually collected it.');"><sup>23</sup></span> in every credit sale it is doubtful whether it [payment] wil be forthcoming or not, and when it is forthcoming it may be bad money.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' If payment is made in small instalments the money may be frittered away.');"><sup>24</sup></span> Three things did R'Johanan say in the name of the men of Jerusalem: when you go out to battle, do not go out among the first but among the last, So that you may return among the first; and treat your Sabbath like a weekday rather than be dependent on your fellow-beings, and strive to be on good terms with him upon whom the hour smiles.
אמר רבי יוחנן שלשה מנוחלי העוה"ב אלו הן הדר בא"י והמגדל בניו לתלמוד תורה והמבדיל על היין במוצאי שבתות מאי היא דמשייר מקידושא לאבדלתא
Three things did R'Joshua B'Levi say in the name of the men of Jerusalem. Do not practise immodesty<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Do not frequent places where immodest sights are to be seen. Var. lec.: do not frequent roofs.');"><sup>25</sup></span> on account of the incident which occurred;<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Viz. , David's sin with Bath Sheba.');"><sup>26</sup></span>
א"ר יוחנן שלשה מכריז עליהן הקב"ה בכל יום על רווק הדר בכרך ואינו חוטא ועל עני המחזיר אבידה לבעליה ועל עשיר המעשר פירותיו בצינעה רב ספרא רווק הדר בכרך הוה
if your daughter has attained puberty, free your slave and give [him] to her;<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Marry her at the earliest possible moment.');"><sup>27</sup></span> and beware of your wife with her first son-in-law. What is the reason? -R'Hisda said: On account of immorality: R'Kahana said: On account of money.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' She is likely to spend your money on him.');"><sup>28</sup></span> And [in fact] both are correct. R'Johanan said: Three are of those who will inherit the world to come, viz. : he who dwells in Eretz Yisrael; and he who brings up his sons to the Study of the Torah; and he who recites habdalah over wine at the termination of the Sabbath. Who is that? He who leaves over [wine] from kiddush for habdalah.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' He has only a little wine and specially reserves for habdalah that which remains over from kiddush.');"><sup>29</sup></span> R'Johanan said: Concerning three does the Holy one, blessed be He, make proclamation every day:<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' As having earned His special approval.');"><sup>30</sup></span> a bachelor who lives in a large town without sinning, a poor man who returns lost property to its owner, and a wealthy man who tithes his produce in secret.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., without ostentation.');"><sup>31</sup></span> R'Safra was a bachelor living in a large town.
