Chapter 63

א קווץ סדוק עקום דומה למגל פסול חרות פסול דומה לחרות כשר אמר רב פפא דעביד כהימנק
1 A thorny [Lulav], a slit [Lulav], [and] a bent [Lulav] that is similar to a scythe are invalid. A naturally hardened [Lulav] is invalid. [A Lulav] similar to [one that was] naturally hardened [but was not actually naturally hardened] is valid. Rabbi Papa said [concerning the slit Lulav], "[This refers to a Lulav] that is made like a Himnak (A writing tool that looks like this: ץ)."
ב עקום דומה למגל אמר רבא לא אמרן אלא לפניו אבל לאחריו ברייתיה הוא
2 [Regarding a Lulav that is] bent, like a scythe, Rava said, "They only said [that it is invalid if it was bent] forward, but [if it were bent] backward, that is its natural state."
ג אמר רב נחמן לצדדין כלפניו דמי ואמרי לה כלאחריו דמי
3 R. Nahman said: At the sides is the same as at the front, and some say, the same as at its back.
ד ואמר רבא האי לולבא דסליק בחד הוצא בעל מום הוא ופסול:
4 Rava further said: A lulav all of which grows on one side is a blemished plant and is invalid.
ה נפרצו עליו כו' אמר רב פפא נפרצו דעביד כי חופיא נפרדו דאיפרוד אפרודי
5 If its leaves were detached etc. R. Papa said. “Detached” means like a broom. “Spread apart” means that they were parted from one another.
ו בעי רב פפא נחלקה התיומת מהו תא שמע דאמר (ר' יוחנן) אמר ר' יהושע בן לוי ניטלה התיומת פסול מאי לאו הוא הדין נחלקה לא ניטלה שאני דהא חסר ליה
6 R. Papa asked: What is the rule if the central leaf is split? Come and hear what R. Yohanan said in the name of R. Joshua b. Levi: If the central leaf is removed, it is invalid. Is this also true if it is split? No, if it is removed the law is different,
ז איכא דאמרי אמר (ר' יוחנן) אמר ריב"ל נחלקה התיומת נעשה כמי שניטלה התיומת ופסול:
7 since it is entirely lacking There are those that say: R. Yohanan said in the name of R. Joshua b. Levi:
ח ר' יהודה אומר: תניא ר' יהודה אומר משום ר' טרפון (ויקרא כג, מ) כפות תמרים כפות אם היה פרוד יכפתנו
8 If the central leaf is split, it is as though it is removed, and [the lulav] is invalid. R. Judah says It has been taught: R. Judah said in the name of R. Tarfon, “Branches (<i>kapot</i>) of palm-trees,” <i>kapot</i> [means that if palm-branches must be] were separated, he must tie them up (<i>yikhtefenu</i>).
ט אמר ליה רבינא לרב אשי ממאי דהאי כפות תמרים דלולבא הוא אימא חרותא בעינא כפות וליכא
9 Ravina said to R. Ashi: How do we know that “branches of palm-trees” refers to the lulav? ... Perhaps it means [branches of] the hardened palm? It must be [a branch the leaves of which can be] bound up, and this one cannot.
י ואימא אופתא כפות מכלל דאיכא פרוד והאי כפות ועומד לעולם
10 But perhaps it means the stalk [itself]? Since the word] “bound” is used, it must refer to something which can be separated, and this is permanently bound.
יא ואימא כופרא אמר אביי (משלי ג, יז) דרכיה דרכי נועם וכל נתיבותיה שלום כתיב
11 But perhaps it means the spiky part of the palms? Abaye answered, It is written, “Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.”
יב אמר ליה רבא תוספאה לרבינא ואימא תרתי כפי דתמרי כפת כתיב ואימא חדא לההוא כף קרי ליה:
12 Raba Tosfa’ah said to Ravina: But perhaps it means two bunches of dates? The word is written <i>kappat</i> (in the singular). Then perhaps it means one? That would be called <i>kaf</i>.
יג ציני הר הברזל כשרה: אמר אביי לא שנו אלא שראשו של זה מגיע לצד עיקרו של זה אבל אין ראשו של זה מגיע לצד עיקרו של זה פסול
13 "The thorny palms of the Iron Mountain are valid." Abaye said: They taught this only when the top of one [leaf] reaches the junction of the next, but if the top of the one does not reach the junction of the next, it is invalid.
יד תניא נמי הכי ציני הר הברזל פסולה והא אנן תנן כשרה אלא ש"מ כאביי שמע מינה
14 It was also taught: The thorny palms of the Iron Mountain are invalid. But have we not learned that they are valid? Rather deduce from this like the teaching of Abaye. Deduce from this.
