Tosefta על נזיר 51:1

A spinal column, the majority of whose vertebrae were sawed off: Even though the structure [of the spine] remains intact, it is pure. [But] whenever it is inside a grave, even if it is broken, and even if it is crushed, it is impure, because the grave joins it together [with other sources of impurity].
