Chasidut for Berakhot 70:16
ומשחא לא זיין והתנן הנודר מן המזון מותר במים ובמלח והוינן בה מים ומלח הוא דלא אקרי מזון הא כל מילי אקרי מזון
Oil does not nourish ? Lo, there is a Mishnaic teaching : He who vows [to abstain] from food may partake of water and salt ! And we argue that water and salt are not called "food," but everything else is so called ; and we further say that this is a refutation of Rab and Samuel who maintain that

וישמע יתרו: the portion dealing with יתרו comes before the giving of the Torah. There is a discussion whether יתרו's portion came before or after the giving of the Torah. If the portion of יתרו came before, we need to understand why the whole giving of the Torah was prefaced with the story of יתרו.
