Commentary for Berakhot 20:13
חזקיהו תלה בזכות עצמו דכתיב זכר נא את אשר התהלכתי לפניך תלו לו בזכות אחרים שנא' (מלכים ב יט, לד) וגנותי אל העיר הזאת להושיעה למעני ולמען דוד עבדי והיינו דריב"ל דאמר ריב"ל מאי דכתיב (ישעיהו לח, יז) הנה לשלום מר לי מר אפי' בשעה ששיגר לו הקב"ה שלום מר הוא לו:
Hezekiah referred to his own merit; as it is written, "Remember now, O Lord, I beseech Thee, how I have walked before Thee" (Is. xxxviii. 3), and the merit of others was referred to ; as it is said, "For I will defend this city, for Mine own sake, and for My servant David's sake" (ibid, xxxvii. 35). This agrees with the statement of R. Joshua b. Levi who said : What means that which is written, "Behold, for my peace I had great bitterness" (Is. xxxviii. 17)? Even when the Holy One, blessed be He, sent him peace, it was bitter for him.
