רמי ליה רב מרי ברה דבת שמואל לרבא תנן האומנין קורין בראש האילן ובראש הנדבך אלמא לא בעי כונה ורמינהי הקורא את שמע צריך שיכוין את לבו שנאמר שמע ישראל ולהלן הוא אומר (דברים כז, ט) הסכת ושמע ישראל מה להלן בהסכת אף כאן בהסכת

Rab Mari, the son of Samuel's daughter, asked Raba : Our Mishnah states : Workmen may read [the Shema'] on the top of a tree or on the top of scaffolding ; hence it is to be inferred that it does not require Kawwanah. I quote in refutation: Who reads the Shema' must direct his heart; as it is said, "Hear, O Israel" (Deut. vi. 4) and elsewhere, "Attend and hear, O Israel " (ibid, xxvii. 9) ; as here "attention" is required so also there !

Her name was Rachel. The son is not called by his father's name, which was Isur (Bab. Bat. 149 a), because his mother became pregnant while a prisoner of war; and although the father embraced Judaism before the child was born, his name is omitted. See Ketubot 23 a.
