Commentary for Berakhot 37:8
נפק דק ואשכח תלת המזלזל בנטילת ידים והמספר אחר מטתן של תלמידי חכמי' והמגיס דעתו כלפי מעלה
He accordingly went and searched and found three — Who despises the washing of the hands, who talks [evil] after the bier of the disciples of the wise, and who acts arrogantly towards the Most High.
Abraham Cohen Footnotes to the English Translation of Masechet Berakhot
The washing of the hands before a meal is a Rabbinical ordinance, and to despite it reflects on the honour of the teachers.
