אמר ליה אביי וחשבונות של מצוה מי אסירי והא רב חסדא ורב המנונא דאמרי תרוייהו חשבונות של מצוה מותר לחשבן בשבת וא"ר אלעזר פוסקין צדקה לעניים בשבת ואמר ר' יעקב אמר ר' יוחנן הולכין לבתי כנסיות ולבתי מדרשות לפקח על עסקי רבים בשבת ואמר רבי יעקב בר אידי אמר רבי יוחנן מפקחין פיקוח נפש בשבת

Abaye said to him: And are accounts of a mitzvah forbidden? Did not R. Hisda and R. Hamnuna both say: Accounts of a mitzvah, one is allowed to calculate them on Shabbat; And R. Elazar said: One may assign charity to the poor on Shabbat; And R. Jacob said [that] R. Yohanan said: One may go to synagogues and to schoolhouses to watch over public affairs on Shabbat; And R. Jacob the son of Idi said [that] R. Yohanan said: One may do any work to save a life on Shabbat;
