Commentary for Sanhedrin 33:3

ורבנן (שמות יח, כב) מוהקל מעליך ונשאו אתך נפקא וילפא סנהדרי גדולה מסנהדרי קטנה

— Scripture saith, And they shall bear the burden of the people with thee:<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Num. XI, 17. ');"><sup>5</sup></span> 'With thee' implies, 'and thou with them'. And R. Judah? — With thee' intimates that [the elders must] be like thee,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' E.g., in purity of family descent and bodily perfection. ');"><sup>6</sup></span>

Tosafot on Sanhedrin

"and they will cease on their own" -- the interpretation is that their prophecy will cease, because the Shechinah does not descend in the midst of sadness, but rather in the midst of joy.

From the mouth of the interpreter: So that when foreign-speaking witnesses came to testify before them, they did not have to contend with the doubters among them that this was hearsay.
