בשלמא למ"ד המבזה חבירו בפני ת"ח אפיקורוס הוי מבזה תלמיד חכם עצמו מגלה פנים בתורה שלא כהלכה הוי אלא למ"ד מבזה תלמיד חכם עצמו אפיקורוס הוי מגלה פנים בתורה כגון מאי כגון מנשה בן חזקיה

Rab said: it is as though he built the heavenly and the earthly Temples, as it is written, And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Ibid. LI, 16. The eschatology of the apocalyptic writers and many Rabbis looked forward to the creation of a Heavenly Temple in the Messianic era-Enoch XC, 29 et seq.; cf. Hag. 12b. ');"><sup>25</sup></span> R. Johanan said: He also shields the whole world [from the consequences of its sins], for it is written, and I have covered [i.e., protected] thee in the shadow of mine hand. Levi said: He also hastens<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lit., 'brings nearer'. ');"><sup>26</sup></span>

The preceding verse states, Wisdom [cries out] in the streets (Prov. 1:20). This verse refers to the recondite secrets of our holy Torah. [Wisdom] states, How long will you simple ones love simplicity? (Prov. 1:22). In other words, you who follow after the simple meaning32Peshat. This refers to the simple, literal meaning of a given text. deceive yourselves with your love of simplicity—the part of the Torah you do believe in—which contains nothing beyond the simple meaning. And scoffers [be eager] to scoff. This has reference to [King] Manasseh [son of Hezekiah], who would expound [difficult haggadot and say, “Did Moses have only to write The sister of Lotan was Timna (Gen. 36:22)]?”33Sanhedrin 99b.
