Midrash for Sanhedrin 178:17

ור"ש מיתה כתיבא ביה וכל מיתה האמורה בתורה סתם אינה אלא חנק

Seeing that he would not listen to him, he said to him , 'Now' a thing was secretly brought to me:<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Ibid. 12. ');"><sup>23</sup></span> thus have I heard from behind the Curtain.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., from the most intimate secrets of God. ');"><sup>24</sup></span>

Sifrei Devarim

"to turn you astray from the way": It is written here "turning astray," and, elsewhere (Ibid. 11) (in respect to one who incites to idol worship), "turning astray." Just as there the punishment is stoning, so, here. R. Shimon says: This one's death is only by strangulation.
