<big><strong>גמ׳</strong></big> אמר שמואל לפרנסה שמין באב מתיבי הבנות ניזונות ומתפרנסות מנכסי אביהן כיצד אין אומרים אילו אביה קיים כך וכך היה נותן לה אלא שמין את הנכסים ונותנין לה מאי לאו פרנסת הבעל אמר רב נחמן בר יצחק לא בפרנסת עצמה

GEMARA. Shmuel said: In respect of the dowry the assessment is based on a [determination of] the father’s [will]. They objected: “The daughters are to be maintained and provided for out of the estate of their father.” How so? They should not say, “Had her father been alive he would have given her such and such a sum” rather the estate is evaluated and she is given [her due share].” Does this not refer to the dowry? Nahman b. Yitzchak replied: No; [it refers to] her own maintenance.
