אין גזעו מחליף אף צדיק ח"ו אין גזעו מחליף לכך נאמר ארז אילו נאמר ארז ולא נאמר תמר הייתי אומר מה ארז אין עושה פירות אף צדיק ח"ו אין עושה פירות לכך נאמר תמר ונאמר ארז

as the stem of the Palm-tree does not renew itself<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e. , it does not produce new shoots once it is cut down.');">¹</span> so too the stem of the righteous, Heaven forfend, does not renew itself; therefore it is said 'Cedar'.
