Responsa for Ketubot 94:4

חייב במזונותיה וכו': תנו רבנן תיקנו מזונותיה תחת מעשה ידיה וקבורתה תחת כתובתה לפיכך בעל אוכל פירות

He provides for his wife’s maintenance: Our Rabbis taught: They established that he provides maintenance in return for receiving her handiwork, and he is responsible for her burial in return for receiving her ketubah [dowry], and therefore the husband receives the usufruct.

Teshuvot Maharam

Q. While A was absent in a foreign country, his wife borrowed money for her sustenance. Upon his return, A refused to pay his wife's debts claiming that she could have supported herself by her work.
A. Biblical law requires that a husband must provide his wife's sustenance; therefore, A must pay whatever his wife borrowed for her sustenance.
