סולדת בהן אבל היד סולדת בהן אין נוטלין בהן

scalded, but one may not wash the hands with water wherein the hand would be scalded.

ואיכא דמתני לה אסיפא

Others refer this [distinction] to the final clause thus, 'The last washing must be With cold Water only', and not with hot water.

אחרונים אין נוטלין אלא בצונן אבל בחמין לא

R'Isaac B'Joseph said in the name of R'Jannai.

אמר רב יצחק בר יוסף אמר רבי ינאי

They said this only of [hot] water wherein the hand is scalded, but one may wash the hands with water wherein the hand is not scalded.

לא שנו אלא שהיד סולדת בהן אבל אין היד סולדת בהן נוטלין

It follows, however, from this that for the first washing one may use even water wherein the hand is scalded.'

מכלל דראשונים אף על פי שהיד סולדת בהן מותר

The middle washing is a matter of free choice'.

אמצעיים רשות

R'Nahman said: They said this only [of the washing] between one course and another course,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Both being meat dishes or milk dishes; cf. however, Tosaf. s.v. .');">¹</span>

אמר רב נחמן

but between a [meat] course and cheese it is a bounden duty to do so.

לא שנו אלא בין תבשיל לתבשיל אבל בין תבשיל לגבינה חובה

R'Judah the son of R'Hiyya said: Why did [the Rabbis] say that it was a bounden duty to wash the hands after the meal?

אמר רב יהודה בריה דרבי חייא

Because of a certain salt of Sodom which makes the eyes blind.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' If one touches the eyes after having handled this salt.');">²</span>

מפני מה אמרו מים אחרונים חובה שמלח סדומית יש שמסמא את העינים

Said Abaye.

אמר אביי

One grain of this is found in a kor of ordinary salt.

ומשתכח כי קורטא בכורא

R'Aha the son of Raba asked R'Ashi: What is the rule if one measured out salt?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Must he wash his hands after it or not?');">³</span>

אמר ליה רב אחא בריה דרבא לרב אשי

- He replied: Undoubtedly.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' He must certainly wash his hands.');">⁴</span>

כל מלחא מאי

Abaye said: At first I thought the reason why the last washing may not be performed over the ground was that it made a mess, but now my Master<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Rabbah b. Nahmani.');">⁵</span>

אמר ליה

has told me: It is because an evil spirit rests upon it.

לא מבעיא

Abaye also said: At first I thought the reason why one should not remove anything from the table whilst another is holding a cup and drinking was the fear lest there occur a mishap at the table,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lit., 'at the meal'. He who is drinking may be annoyed at the removal of those things and may choke in his anger.');">⁶</span>

אמר אביי

but now my Master has told me: It is because it may cause vertigo.

מריש הוה אמינא האי דלא משו מיא בתראי על ארעא משום זוהמא

This applies, however, only if [the thing is] taken away and not returned, but if taken and returned it does not matter.

אמר לי מר

Moreover, it applies only if the thing is taken away a distance of more than four cubits [from the table], but if it remains within four cubits' distance it does not matter.

משום דשריא רוח רעה עלייהו

Moreover, it applies only to such things as may be required at the table, but if it is not required at the table it does not matter.

ואמר אביי

Mar son of R'Ashi used to be particular even about [the removal of] a pestle and mortar for [pounding] spices, for these are required at the table.

מריש הוה אמינא האי דלא שקיל מידי מפתורא כי נקיט איניש כסא למשתי שמא יארע דבר קלקלה בסעודה

Abaye also said: At first I thought the reason why one collects the crumbs [from the floor] was mere tidiness, but now my Master has told me: It is because it might lead to poverty.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' If one leaves the crumbs strewn on the floor.');">⁷</span>

אמר לי מר

Once the angel of poverty was following a certain man but could not prevail over him, because the man was extremely careful about [collecting the] crumbs.

משום דקשי לרוח צרדא

One day he ate some bread upon the grass.'

ולא אמרן אלא דשקיל ולא מהדר אבל משקל ואהדורי לית לן בה

Now'.

ולא אמרן אלא חוץ לארבע אמות אבל תוך ארבע אמות לית לן בה

[said the angel] 'he will certainly fall into my hand'.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Believing that this man would certainly fail to pick up all the crumbs from the grass.');">⁸</span>

ולא אמרן אלא מידי דצריך לסעודתא אבל מידי דלא צריך לסעודתא לית לן בה

After he had eaten he took a spade, dug up the grass, and threw it all into a river.

מר בר רב אשי קפיד אפילו אאסיתא ובוכנא דתבלי מידי דצריכי לסעודתא

He then heard [the angel] exclaiming.'

ואמר אביי

Alas, he has driven me<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lit., 'this person'.');">⁹</span>

מריש הוה אמינא האי דכנשי נשווראה משום מנקירותא

out of his house'.

אמר לי מר

Abaye also said: At first I thought the reason why one does not drink froth was that it was nauseous, but now my Master has told me: It is because it may cause catarrh.

משום דקשי לעניותא

To drink it may cause catarrh, to blow it away may cause headache, and to skim it [with the hand] may cause poverty.

ההוא גברא דהוה מהדר עליה שרא דעניותא ולא הוה יכיל ליה דקא זהיר אנשוורא טובא

What then should one do?

יומא חד כרך ליפתא איבלי

One must let it settle down by itself.

אמר

For catarrh [contracted from drinking the froth] of wine [one should drink] beer, for that from beer one should drink water, for that from water there is no remedy.

השתא ודאי נפל בידאי

This bears out the popular saying, poverty follows the poor.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The poor man not having anything but water to drink is afflicted by that disease for which there is no remedy.');">¹⁰</span>

בתר דאכיל אייתי מרא עקרינהו ליבלי שדינהו לנהרא

Abaye also said: At first I thought the reason why one should not eat vegetables from the bunch which was tied up by the gardener was because it had the appearance of gluttony, but now my Master has told me, it is because one lays oneself open thereby to the dangers of magic.

שמעיה דקאמר

R'Hisda and Rabbah B'R'Huna once were travelling on a ship.

ווי דאפקיה ההוא גברא מביתיה

A certain lady said to them, 'Take me with you'; but they would not.

ואמר אביי

She then pronounced a spell and the ship was held fast.

מריש הוה אמינא האי דלא שתי אופיא משום מאיסותא

They [in return] pronounced a spell and it was freed.

אמר לי מר

She said: 'What power have I over you?

משום דקשי לכרסם

seeing that you do not cleanse yourselves with a potsherd.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' After an evacuation. V. Shab. 81b.');">¹¹</span>

מישתיה קשה לכרסם מינפח ביה קשיא לרישא מדחייה קשיא לעניותא

neither do you crush a louse on your clothes, nor do you eat vegetables from a bunch tied up by the gardener.

מאי תקנתיה

Abaye also said: At first I thought that the reason why one does not eat vegetables which had fallen on to the tray was because it was not clean, but now my Master has told me: It is because It causes a foul smell in the mouth.

לשקעיה שקועי

Abaye also said: At first I thought the reason why one does not sit under a drain pipe was that there was waste water there, but my Master has told me.

לכרסם דחמרא שיכרא דשיכרא מיא דמיא לית ליה תקנתא

It is because demons are to be found there.

והיינו דאמרי אינשי

Certain carriers were once carrying a barrel of wine.

בתר עניא אזלא עניותא

Wishing to take a rest they put it down under a drain pipe, whereupon the barrel burst, so they came to Mar son of R'Ashi.

ואמר אביי

He brought forth trumpets and exorcised the demon who now stood before him.

מריש הוה אמינא האי דלא אכלי ירקא מכישא דאסר גינאה משום דמיחזי כרעבתנותא

Said he to the devil, 'Why did you do such a thing? ' He replied.'

אמר לי מר

What else could I do, seeing that they put it down on my ear'?

משום דקשי לכשפים

The other [Mar son Of R'Ashi] retorted: 'What business had you in a public place?

רב חסדא ורבה בר רב הונא הוו קאזלי בארבא

It is you that are in the wrong, you must therefore pay for the damage'.

אמרה להו ההיא מטרוניתא

Said the devil, 'Will the Master give me a time wherein to pay'?

אותבן בהדייכו

A date was fixed.

לא אותבוה אמרה מלתא אסרתה לארבא

When the day arrived he defaulted.

אמרו אינהו מילתא שריוה

He came to court and [Mar B'R'Ashi] said to him, 'Why did you not keep your time? ' He replied.'

אמרה להו

We have no right to take away anything that is tied up sealed, measured or counted; but only if we find something that has been abandoned'.

מאי איעביד לכו דלא מקנח לכו בחספא ולא קטיל לכו כינה אמנייכו ולא אכיל לכו ירקא מכישא דאסר גינאה

Abaye also said: At first I thought the reason why one pours off [a little water] from the mouth of the jug [before drinking therefrom] was the fear of scraps [that may be on the surface], but now my Master has told me: It is because of evil waters.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., water from which demons had drunk.');">¹²</span>

ואמר אביי

A demon in the service of R'Papa once went to fetch water from the river but was away a long time.

מריש הוה אמינא האי דלא אכלי ירקא דנפל אתכא משום מאיסותא אמר לי מר

When he returned he was asked.'

משום דקשה לריח הפה

Why were you so long? ' He replied.'

ואמר אביי

[I waited] until the evil waters had all gone'.

מריש הוה אמינא האי דלא יתבי תותי מרזיבא משום שופכים

In the meantime

אמר לי מר

משום דשכיחי מזיקין

הנהו שקולאי דהוו דרו חביתא דחמרא

בעו לאיתפוחי אותבוה תותי מרזיבא פקעה

אתו לקמיה דמר בר רב אשי אפיק שיפורי שמתיה

אתא לקמיה אמר ליה

אמאי תעביד הכי

אמר ליה

היכי אעביד כי אותביה באונאי

אמר ליה

את בדוכתא דשכיחי רבים מאי בעית

את הוא דשנית זיל שלים

אמר ליה

השתא נמי ליקבע לי מר זימנא ואפרע

קבע ליה זימנא

כי מטא זימנא איעכב

כי אתא אמר ליה

אמאי לא אתית בזמנך

אמר ליה

כל מילי דצייר וחתים וכייל ומני לית לן רשותא למשקל מיניה עד דמשכחינן מידי דהפקרא

ואמר אביי

מריש הוה אמינא האי דשדי מיא מפומא דחצבא משום ציבתא

אמר לי מר

משום דאיכא מים הרעים

ההוא בר שידא דהוה בי רב פפא אזל לאתויי מיא מנהרא איעכב

כי אתא אמרו ליה

אמאי איעכבת

אמר להו

עד דחלפי מים הרעים
