1since on account of its pungency it absorbs [from the knife]; but in the case of a cucumber one need only scrape away the surface of the cut and then one may eat it [with a milk sauce].
בקילחי דליפתא שרי דסילקא אסירי
2Turnip stalks<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' If cut with a meat knife.');"><sup>1</sup></span>
גואי פתך בהו דליפתא שפיר דמי
3are permitted;<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' To be eaten with a milk sauce.');"><sup>2</sup></span>

4beet stalks are forbidden, but if one cut these and turnips alternately,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., if one first cut a turnip with the meat knife and then beet.');"><sup>3</sup></span>
המהו לאנוחי כדא דמלחא גבי כדא דכמכא
5they are permitted.
ואמר ליה
6R'Dimi enquired of R'Nahman: May one place a jar of salt close to a jar of milk sauce?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The apprehension is lest some of the milk sauce fall into the salt and he used with the latter to salt meat.');"><sup>4</sup></span>

8It is forbidden.

9And what about a jar of vinegar?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' May one place it next to a jar of milk sauce?');"><sup>5</sup></span>

12What Is the difference between the two?

ידוהאי ליתיה איסורא בעיניה ההוא בר גוזלא דנפל לכדא דכמכא שרייה רב חיננא בריה דרבא מפשרוניא
14[I will tell you the difference].

15And what is it? - ln the one case the forbidden substance is discernible, in the other it is not discernible.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Milk sauce is noticeable in salt, hut in vinegar it would melt away and would not even leave any trace of its flavour.');"><sup>7</sup></span>
טזמאן חכים למישרי כי האי גוונא אי לאו רב חיננא בריה דרבא מפשרוניא
16A young pigeon once fell into a jar of milk sauce,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The pigeon had been ritually slaughtered and prepared for cooking when it fell into the milk sauce which usually contains a substantial amount of salt.');"><sup>8</sup></span>

17and R'Hinena son of Raba of Pashrunia permitted it.
יחכי אמר שמואל מליח הרי הוא כרותח הני מילי היכא דאינו נאכל מחמת מלחו אבל האי כותחא הרי נאכל מחמת מלחו
18Thereupon Raba remarked: Who, save R'Hinena son of Raba of Pashrunia, is so wise as to permit such a thing?
יטוהני מילי חי אבל צלי בעי קליפה
19For he [R'Hinena] is of the opinion that - Samuel's dictum, Whatsoever is salted is counted as hot, applies only to the case [of food salted so much] that it cannot be eaten on account of the salt;<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The salting in that case being for the purpose of preserving the food.');"><sup>9</sup></span>
כואי אית ביה פילי כוליה אסור ואי מתבל בתבלין כוליה אסור
20but this milk sauce can be eaten together with the salt that is in it.
כאאמר רב נחמן אמר שמואל
21This [was allowed] only in the case of a raw pigeon, bu if it was roasted<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' [Even if it was now cold, for roasting softens the meat, making it liable to absorb the milk sauce (Asheri) . Others explain this to refer to hot roast; Adreth and Nissim.]');"><sup>10</sup></span>
כבככר שחתך עליה בשר אסור לאכלה
22it would require to be pared around; moreover if there were cuts In It It would be wholly forbidden;<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' On account of the cuts and cracks in the body or because of the high seasoning, the roast pigeon would be all the more susceptible to absorb the milk sauce.');"><sup>11</sup></span>
כגוהני מילי דאסמיק והני מילי דאבריה והני מילי דאסמכיה אבל קלישתא לית לן בה
23likewise, if it was seasoned with spices it would be wholly forbidden.
כדשמואל שדי ליה לכלביה רב הונא יהיב ליה לשמעיה
24R'Nahman said in the name of Samuel, A loaf of bread upon which one cut [roast] meat may not be eaten,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Because of the blood which the bread absorbed.');"><sup>12</sup></span>
כהמה נפשך אי שרי לכולי עלמא שרי אי אסור לכולי עלמא אסור
25but only if [the meat was] red, and only if [the blood] penetrated through the bread, and only if [the juice which exuded from the meat was] thick, but if it was thin then it does not matter.
כושאני רב הונא דאנינא דעתיה
26Samuel would throw that [loaf of bread] to the dogs.
כזרבא אכיל ליה וקרי ליה חמר בשר
27R'Huna used to give It his attendant.
כחאמר רב נחמן אמר שמואל
28Say what you will; if it is permitted i permitted to all, and if it is forbidden it is forbidden to all! - R'Huna's was quite a special case, for he wa fastidious [in his food].<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Actually R. Huna regarded it as permitted but would not eat it himself because of his sensitive nature.');"><sup>13</sup></span>
כטאין מניחין כלי תחת בשר עד שיכלה כל מראה אדמומית שבו
29Raba used to eat it and called it 'meat wine'.
למנא ידעינן
30R'Nahman again said in the name of Samuel, One may not place a vessel beneath meat [that is roasting]<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' In order to collect the drippings of fat; v. supra 111b.');"><sup>14</sup></span>
לאמר זוטרא משמיה דרב פפא אמר
31until all the redness [of the meat] has gone.
לבמשתעלה תימרתו
32How does one know this? - Mar Zutra answered in the name of R'Papa.
לגמתקיף לה רב אשי
33When the smoke rises.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' From the meat, i.e., the meat is now dry and all the blood has been drawn out. Aliter: From the coals; this smoke is from the drippings of fat after the drippings of blood have ceased.');"><sup>15</sup></span>
לדודלמא תתאה מטא עילאה לא מטא
34R'Ashi demurred saying.
להאלא אמר רב אשי
35Perhaps the lower half has been roasted and the upper half has not?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' And there may still be drippings of blood from the upper half, i.e., that which is furthest from the fire.');"><sup>16</sup></span>
לולית ליה תקנתא אלא משדא ביה תרתי גללי מלחא
36R'Ashi therefore said: There is no other remedy but to cast [into the vessel] two lumps of salt
