מחטא דתלמיותא

Quilting.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Stitching in furrows; cf. supra ');">¹</span> It was taught: Rabbi said: No craft can disappear from the world - happy is he who sees his parents in a superior craft, and woe to him who sees his parents in a mean craft.

תניא רבי אומר אין לך אומנות שעוברת מן העולם אשרי מי שרואה את הוריו באומנות מעולה אוי לו למי שרואה את הוריו באומנות פגומה אי אפשר לעולם בלא בסם ובלא בורסקי אשרי מי שאומנותו בסם ואוי לו מי שאומנותו בורסקי אי אפשר לעולם בלא זכרים ובלא נקבות אשרי מי שבניו זכרים ואוי לו למי שבניו נקיבות

The world cannot exist without a perfume-maker and without a tanner-happy is he whose craft is that of a perfume-maker, and woe to him who is a tanner by trade. The world cannot exist without males and without females-happy is he whose children are males, and woe to him whose children are females.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Probably not prejudice against the female sex, but because daughters were a greater anxiety - a dowry had to be found for them, and they easily got into mischief; cf. Sanh. 100b, the quotation from the Book of Ben Sira.');">²</span>

ר"מ אומר לעולם ילמד אדם לבנו אומנות נקיה וקלה ויבקש רחמים למי שהעושר והנכסים שלו שאין עניות מן האומנות ואין עשירות מן האומנות אלא למי שהעושר שלו שנאמר (חגי ב, ח) לי הכסף ולי הזהב נאם ה' צבאות

R'Meir said: One should always teach his son a clean and easy craft, and earnestly pray to Him to Whom [all] wealth and property belong, for neither poverty nor wealth comes from one's calling, but from<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lit., 'to'.');">³</span> Him to whom wealth and property belong, as it is said: The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Hag. II, 8.');">⁴</span>

ר"ש בן אלעזר אומר אם ראית מימיך תניא ר"ש בן אלעזר אומר מימי לא ראיתי צבי קייץ וארי סבל ושועל חנוני והם מתפרנסים שלא בצער והם לא נבראו אלא לשמשני ואני נבראתי לשמש את קוני מה אלו שלא נבראו אלא לשמשני מתפרנסים שלא בצער ואני שנבראתי לשמש את קוני אינו דין שאתפרנס שלא בצער אלא שהרעותי את מעשי וקיפחתי את פרנסתי שנאמר (ירמיהו ה, כה) עונותיכם הטו

R'SIMEON B. ELEAZAR SAID, HAVE YOU EVER SEEN [etc.]. It was taught: R'Simeon B'Eleazar said: In my whole lifetime I have not seen a deer engaged in gathering fruits, a lion carrying burdens, or a fox as a shopkeeper, yet they are sustained without trouble, though they were created only to serve me, whereas I was created to serve my Maker.

רבי נהוראי אומר מניח אני כל אומנות וכו' תניא רבי נהוראי אומר מניח אני כל אומנות שבעולם ואיני מלמד את בני אלא תורה שכל אומנות שבעולם אין עומדת לו אלא בימי ילדותו אבל בימי זקנותו הרי הוא מוטל ברעב אבל תורה אינה כן עומדת לו לאדם בעת ילדותו ונותנת לו אחרית ותקוה בעת זקנותו בעת ילדותו מהו אומר (ישעיהו מ, לא) וקוי ה' יחליפו כח יעלו אבר כנשרים בזקנותו מהו אומר (תהלים צב, טו) עוד ינובון בשיבה דשנים ורעננים יהיו

Now, if these, who were created only to serve me are sustained without trouble, how much more so should I be sustained without trouble, I who was created to serve my Maker! But it is because I have acted evilly and destroyed my livelihood, as it is said, your iniquities have turned away these things.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Jer. V, 25.');">⁵</span> R'NEHORAI SAID: I ABANDON EVERY TRADE etc. It was taught: R'Nehorai said: I abandon all trades in the world and teach my son only Torah, for every trade in the world stands a man in stead only in his youth, but in his old age he is exposed to hunger.

But the Torah is not so: it stands by him in his youth and gives him a future and hope in his old age. Of the time of his youth what Is said? But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Isa. XL, 31.');">⁶</span> Of his old age what is said? They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be full of sap and green.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Ps. XCII, 15. ');">⁷</span>
