Megillah 35

Chapter 35

א (הושע ג, ה) אחר ישובו בני ישראל ובקשו את ה' אלהיהם ואת דוד מלכם וכיון שבא דוד באתה תפלה שנאמר (ישעיהו נו, ז) והביאותים אל הר קדשי ושמחתים בבית תפלתי

1 "Afterwards, the Children of Israel shall return, and they shall seek Hashem, their G-d, and [the continuation of the dynasty of] David, their king. And as soon as David comes, prayer comes, as it is said, "And I shall bring them to my holy mountain, and I shall make them happy in my house of prayer (Isaiah 56:7)."

ב וכיון שבאת תפלה באת עבודה שנאמר עולותיהם וזבחיהם לרצון על מזבחי וכיון שבאת עבודה באתה תודה שנאמר (תהלים נ, כג) זובח תודה יכבדנני

2 And as soon as prayer comes, [Temple] service comes, as it is said [in the above verse], "Their elevation offerings and sacrifices [shall be] pleasing on my altar." And as soon as [Temple] service comes, thanksgiving comes, as it is said, "He who sacrifices a thanksgiving offering shall honor me (Psalms 50:23)."

ג ומה ראו לומר ברכת כהנים אחר הודאה דכתיב (ויקרא ט, כב) וישא אהרן את ידיו אל העם ויברכם וירד מעשות החטאת והעולה והשלמים

3 What was their reason for saying the priestly blessing after thanksgiving? Because it is written, “And Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them and he came down from offering the sin-offering and the burnt-offering and the peace-offerings” (Leviticus 9:22).

ד אימא קודם עבודה לא ס"ד דכתיב וירד מעשות החטאת וגו' מי כתיב לעשות מעשות כתיב

4 I would [therefore] say [that it should be mentioned] prior to [Temple] service [seeing as Aaron blessed the people and then the offerings came]? You should not think that, as it is written, "And he went down from doing the sin offering, etc." Is it written, 'to do'? It is written 'from doing' [meaning, Aaron didn't go down to do the offerings, he went down from already doing them in the past].

ה ולימרה אחר העבודה לא ס"ד דכתיב זובח תודה

5 [Therefore, shouldn't it] be said after [Temple] service? You should not think that, as it is written, "He who sacrifices a thanksgiving offering (Psalms 50:23) [meaning, thanksgiving comes right after sacrifice]."

ו מאי חזית דסמכת אהאי סמוך אהאי מסתברא עבודה והודאה חדא מילתא היא

6 What was seen to consider this verse more than that verse? It is explained, that worship and thanksgiving are one [Hebrew] word [in the verse; the word 'Todah' means both a sacrifice and thanks].

ז ומה ראו לומר שים שלום אחר ברכת כהנים דכתיב (במדבר ו, כז) ושמו את שמי על בני ישראל ואני אברכם ברכה דהקב"ה שלום שנאמר (תהלים כט, יא) ה' יברך את עמו בשלום

7 What was their reason for saying “give peace” after the priestly blessing? — Because it is written, “So they [the priests] shall put my name on the children of Israel, and [then] I shall bless them” (Numbers 6:27) and the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, is peace, as it says, “The Lord shall bless His people with peace” (Psalms 29:11).

ח וכי מאחר דמאה ועשרים זקנים ומהם כמה נביאים תקנו תפלה על הסדר שמעון הפקולי מאי הסדיר שכחום וחזר וסדרום

8 Since hundred and twenty elders, among whom were many prophets, established the prayers in the proper order, what did Shimon the Pakulite arrange? They forgot them, and he went back and arranged them.

ט מכאן ואילך אסור לספר בשבחו של הקב"ה דא"ר אלעזר מאי דכתיב (תהלים קו, ב) מי ימלל גבורות ה' ישמיע כל תהלתו למי נאה למלל גבורות ה' למי שיכול להשמיע כל תהלתו

9 Farther than these [nineteen blessings], it is forbidden to praise the Holy One, Blessed be He, for Rabbi Elazar said, What is the meaning of the verse, "He who recites the great doings of G-d shall recite all his praises (Psalms 106:2)"? To whom is it befitting to recite [all] the great doings of G-d? To someone who can say all his praises [which are infinite].

י אמר רבה בר בר חנה א"ר יוחנן המספר בשבחו של הקב"ה יותר מדאי נעקר מן העולם שנאמר (איוב לז, כ) היסופר לו כי אדבר אם אמר איש כי יבלע

10 Rabbah b. Bar Hannah said in the name of R. Yohanan: One who tells of the praises of the Holy One, blessed be He, in excess is uprooted from the world, as it says, “Will it be told Him if I speak? If a man says it, he will be swallowed” (Job 37:20).

יא דרש ר' יהודה איש כפר גבוריא ואמרי לה איש כפר גבור חיל מאי דכתיב (תהלים סה, ב) לך דומיה תהלה סמא דכולה משתוקא כי אתא רב דימי אמר אמרי במערבא מלה בסלע משתוקא בתרין:

11 Rabbi Yehuda of Kefar Gevuria, or some say of Kefar Gibor Chayil, expounded, "What is the meaning of the verse, 'For you, silence is praise (Psalms 65:2)'? Silence is a cure for everything." When Rav Dimi came [from Israel], he said, "They say in the west [ie. Israel]: 'A word is worth a Sela, silence two.

יב קראה על פה לא יצא וכו': מנלן אמר רבא אתיא זכירה זכירה כתיב הכא והימים האלה נזכרים וכתיב התם (שמות יז, יד) כתב זאת זכרון בספר מה להלן בספר אף כאן בספר

12 (Mishnah:) If he read it by heart, he has not fulfilled his obligation. (Gemara:) From where do we know this? Rava said, "This is learnt from the word Zechirah, which appears in two places. It is stated here [in the Megillah] 'And these days are remembered', and it is stated there (Exodus 17:14) 'Write this as a remembrance in the book.' Just as there, where the word 'remember' means in a book, so too here, it means that we 'remember...these days' from a book."

יג וממאי דהאי זכירה קריאה היא דלמא עיון בעלמא לא סלקא דעתך (דכתיב) (דברים כה, יז) זכור יכול בלב כשהוא אומר לא תשכח הרי שכחת הלב אמור הא מה אני מקיים זכור בפה:

13 But how do we know that this zekhirah refers to reading [out loud]? Perhaps it means reading with the eyes? Do not think such a thing, since it has been taught: “Remember” [zakhor] (Deuteronomy 25:17). Do not think such a thing, since it has been taught: “Remember” [zakhor] (Deuteronomy 25:17). This might be only with the mind? When it says, “Do not forget,” forgetting in one’s heart is already stated. How then can I fulfill “remember”? With one’s mouth.

יד קראה תרגום לא יצא וכו': היכי דמי אילימא דכתיבה מקרא וקרי לה תרגום היינו על פה לא צריכא דכתיבה תרגום וקרי לה תרגום:

14 [MISHNA:] "If he read it in Aramaic, he did not fulfill is obligation..." How so? If the scroll is written in Hebrew, and the reader reads in Aramaic, this is by heart! [which was forbidden previously.] Therefore, here, the case must be that it was written in Aramaic and it was read in Aramaic.

טו אבל קורין אותה ללועזות בלעז וכו': והא אמרת קראה בכל לשון לא יצא רב ושמואל דאמרי תרוייהו בלעז יווני

15 [MISHNA:] "But he may read in a foreign language to a foreigner." Had we not said [previously in the Mishna] that to read in any [other] language was not permissible? Rav and Shmuel agreed: [Here, we are dealing with] the Greek language.

טז היכי דמי אילימא דכתיבה אשורית וקרי לה יוונית היינו על פה א"ר אחא א"ר אלעזר שכתובה בלעז יוונית

16 How so? If you say that it is written in Hebrew and he reads it in Greek? This is the same as saying by heart? R. Aha said in the name of R. Elazar: When it was written in the Greek vernacular.

יז וא"ר אחא א"ר אלעזר מנין שקראו הקב"ה ליעקב אל שנאמר (בראשית לג, כ) ויקרא לו אל אלהי ישראל דאי סלקא דעתך למזבח קרא ליה יעקב אל ויקרא לו יעקב מיבעי ליה אלא ויקרא לו ליעקב אל ומי קראו אל אלהי ישראל

17 R. Aha also said in the name of R. Elazar: How do we know that the Holy One, blessed be He, called Jacob El [God]? As it says, “And the God of Israel called him [Jacob] El” (Genesis 33:20). For should you think that [what the text means is that] Jacob called the altar El, then it should be written, “And Jacob called it.” Rather [it is written] “And He called to Jacob, El.” And who called him so? The God of Israel.

יח מיתיבי קראה גיפטית עברית עילמית מדית יוונית לא יצא

18 They objected [against Rav and Shmuel]: “If one reads it in Coptic, in Hebrew, in Elamean, in Median, in Greek, he has not fulfilled his obligation”!

יט הא לא דמיא אלא להא גיפטית לגיפטים עברית לעברים עילמית לעילמים יוונית ליוונים יצא

19 [That is if he did not understand the language. Rav and Shmuel discuss one who knows Greek, as in] these examples of reading "in Giftian to Giftians, Hebrew to Hebrews, Elamite to Elamites, or Greek to Greeks, he has fulfilled his obligation."

כ אי הכי רב ושמואל אמאי מוקמי לה למתני' בלעז יוונית לוקמה בכל לעז [אלא מתניתין כברייתא] וכי איתמר דרב ושמואל בעלמא איתמר רב ושמואל דאמרי תרוייהו לעז יווני לכל כשר

20 If that is the case, why do Rav and Shmuel explain the Mishnah to refer to the Greek vernacular? Let them make it refer to any vernacular? — Rather the Mishnah agrees with the baraita, and the statement of Rav and Shmuel was meant to be a general one: Rav and Shmuel both say that the Greek vernacular is good for all peoples.

כא והא קתני יוונית ליוונים אין לכולי עלמא לא אינהו דאמור כרשב"ג דתנן רשב"ג אומר אף ספרים לא התירו שיכתבו אלא יוונית

21 Does it not teach [in the Braita:] "Greek to Greeks" - and the word "Greeks" comes to exclude all other nations? It is as Raban Shimon ben Gamliel taught [in a Mishna:] "Raban Shimon ben Gamliel says: [holy] Books may not be written [in any other language] save for Greek. [and cannot be maftir anyone an obligation, save for Greek.]"

כב ולימרו הלכה כרשב"ג אי אמרי הלכה כרשב"ג הוה אמינא הני מילי שאר ספרים אבל מגילה דכתיב בה ככתבם אימא לא קמ"ל:

22 Let them then say, The halakhah follows Rabban Shimon b. Gamaliel? — Had they said, The halakhah follows Rabban Shimon b. Gamaliel, I would have said that this is the case with other books of the Scriptures but not with the Megillah, in which it is written, “According to their writing.” Therefore it teaches us [that this is not so].

כג והלועז ששמע אשורית יצא וכו': והא לא ידע מאי קאמרי מידי דהוה אנשים ועמי הארץ

23 [MISHNA:] "A foreigner who heard it in Hebrew has fulfilled his obligation." But he doesn't understand what is being said! Rather, one has fulfilled his obligation even without understanding, like women and country bumpkins.

כד מתקיף לה רבינא אטו אנן האחשתרנים בני הרמכים מי ידעינן אלא מצות קריאה ופרסומי ניסא הכא נמי מצות קריאה ופרסומי ניסא:

24 Ravina strongly disagreed with this answer, saying: "And do we know the meaning of ha-achashteranim benei ha-ramachim? But all the same we perform the Mitzvah of reading the Megillah and proclaiming the miracle. So they too perform the Mitzvah of reading the Megillah and proclaiming the miracle."

כה קראה סירוגין יצא וכו': לא הוו ידעי רבנן מאי סירוגין שמעוה לאמתא דבי רבי דקאמרה להו לרבנן דהוי עיילי פסקי פסקי לבי רבי עד מתי אתם נכנסין סירוגין סירוגין

25 [MISHNA:] "If he read it with seirugin, he has fulfilled his obligation." The Rabbis did not know what seirugin was. Then, one day, they heard the maid of Rabbi Yehudah Hanasi's house say to the Rabbis who would come into the house at intervals. "How long will you come in seirugin seirugin?"

כו לא הוו ידעי רבנן מאי חלוגלוגות שמעוה לאמתא דבי רבי דאמרה ליה לההוא גברא דהוה קא מבדר פרפחיני עד מתי אתה מפזר חלוגלוגך

26 The Rabbis did not know what chaluglugot was. Then, one day, they heard the maid of Rabbi Yehudah Hanasi's house on seeing a man peeling portulaks, say to him, "How long will you be peeling your chaluglugoth?"

כז לא הוו ידעי רבנן מאי (משלי ד, ח) סלסלה ותרוממך שמעוה לאמתא דבי רבי דהוות אמרה לההוא גברא דהוה מהפך במזייה אמרה ליה עד מתי אתה מסלסל בשערך

27 The Rabbis did not know the meaning of “Salseleah and she will exalt you” (Proverbs 4:8). One day they heard the maidservant of the house of Rabbi say to a man who was curling his hair, she said to him: How long will you be mesalsel with your hair?

כח לא הוו ידעי רבנן מאי (תהלים נה, כג) השלך על ה' יהבך אמר רבה בר בר חנה זימנא חדא הוה אזילנא בהדי ההוא טייעא וקא דרינא טונא ואמר לי שקול יהביך ושדי אגמלאי

28 The Rabbis did not know the meaning of, “Cast upon the Lord your yehav” (Psalms 55:23) Rabbah b. Bar Hanah said: One day I was travelling with a certain Arab and was carrying a load, and he said to me, “Lift up your yehav and put it on [one of] the camels.”

כט לא הוו ידעי רבנן מאי (ישעיהו יד, כג) וטאטאתיה במטאטא השמד שמעוה לאמתא דבי רבי דהוות אמרה לחברתה שקולי טאטיתא וטאטי ביתא

29 The Rabbis did not know the meaning of “And ta’atihah bemetateh of destruction” (Isaiah 14:23). They heard the maidservant of Rabbi’s household say to her friend, ” “Take the broom ta’atitah and sweep (ta’ate) the house.

30 The Rabbis taught [in a Braita:] "If he read it in intervals, he fulfilled his obligation."
