Chapter 9

א שמחה אינה נוהגת אלא בזמנה
1 rejoicing is observed only at the proper time.
ב אמר רב מגילה בזמנה קורין אותה אפי' ביחיד שלא בזמנה בעשרה רב אסי אמר בין בזמנה בין שלא בזמנה בעשרה הוה עובדא וחש ליה רב להא דרב אסי
2 Rav said: The Megillah [is read] in its (proper) time; it is read even if alone. But if not in its time, [only] with ten. Rav Assi said: Whether in its time or not in its time, [only] with ten. There was such a case, and Rav troubled himself to [comply with the ruling] of Rav Assi.
ג ומי אמר רב הכי והאמר רב יהודה בריה דרב שמואל בר שילת משמיה דרב פורים שחל להיות בשבת ערב שבת זמנם ערב שבת זמנם והא שבת זמנם הוא אלא לאו הכי קאמר שלא בזמנם כזמנם מה זמנם אפי' ביחיד אף שלא בזמנם אפילו ביחיד
3 But did Rav actually say this? Did not R. Judah the son of R. Shmuel b. Shilat say in the name of Rav: If Purim falls on Shabbat, Friday is the proper time? Friday is the proper time! Surely Shabbat is the proper time! What Rav must have meant is this: The alternative time is like the proper time. Just as at the proper time [the Megillah may be read] by an individual, so at the alternative time [it may be read] by an individual.
ד לא לענין מקרא מגילה בעשרה אלא מאי ערב שבת זמנם לאפוקי מדרבי דאמר הואיל ונדחו עיירות ממקומן ידחו ליום הכניסה הא קמ"ל דערב שבת זמנם הוא:
4 No. For the reading of the Megillah Rav requires ten. What then did he mean by saying “Friday is the proper time”? His was rejecting the opinion of Rabbi, who said that since the towns had to shift their time they should shift to the day of gathering. Therefore Rav teaches us that Friday is the proper day [to which they should shift].
ה <big><strong>מתני׳</strong></big> אי זו היא עיר גדולה כל שיש בה עשרה בטלנין פחות מכאן הרי זה כפר
5 Mishnah. What is a 'large city'? Any in which there are ten men of leisure. Less than that, and it is a village.
ו באלו אמרו מקדימין ולא מאחרין אבל זמן עצי כהנים ותשעה באב חגיגה והקהל מאחרין ולא מקדימין
6 In respect of these they said that they should be moved up but not postponed. But with regard to the bringing the wood for the priests, the [fast of] Tisha B’Av, the hagigah, and assembling the people they postpone [until after Shabbat] and they do not move them up.
ז אע"פ שאמרו מקדימין ולא מאחרין מותרין בהספד ובתענית ומתנות לאביונים א"ר יהודה אימתי מקום שנכנסין בשני ובחמישי אבל מקום שאין נכנסין לא בשני ולא בחמישי אין קורין אותה אלא בזמנה:
7 Although they said that they should be moved up but not postponed, it is permissible to mourn, to fast, and to distribute gifts to the poor [on these earlier days]. Rabbi Judah said: When is this so? In a place where people gather on Mondays and Thursdays, but in places where people do not gather on Mondays and Thursdays, the Megillah is read only on its proper day.
ח <big><strong>גמ׳</strong></big> תנא עשרה בטלנין שבבית הכנסת:
8 Gemara. [Ten men of leisure]: A Tanna taught: The ten men of leisure who are in the synagogue.
ט באלו אמרו מקדימין ולא מאחרין: מ"ט אמר רבי אבא אמר שמואל אמר קרא ולא יעבור
9 With regard to these they said that they should be pushed forward but not postponed. What is the reason? Abba said in the name of Shmuel: The text says, “And it shall not pass” (Esther 9:27).
י ואמר רבי אבא אמר שמואל מנין שאין מונין ימים לשנים שנא' (שמות יב, ב) לחדשי השנה חדשים אתה מונה לשנים ואי אתה מונה ימים לשנים
10 Rabbi Abba said in the name of Shmuel: From where [do we learn] that we do not count days for [reckoning] years? As it says (Exodus 12:2): "For the months of the year." You count months for years, but you do not count days for years.
יא ורבנן דקיסרי משום ר' אבא אמרו מנין שאין מחשבין שעות לחדשים שנא' (במדבר יא, כ) עד חדש ימים ימים אתה מחשב לחדשים ואי אתה מחשב שעות לחדשים:
11 And the rabbis of Caesaria said in the name of Rabbi Abba: From where [do we learn] that we do not reckon hours for the months? As it says (Numbers 11:20): "Until a month of days". You reckon days for months, but you do not reckon hours for months.
יב אבל זמן עצי כהנים ותשעה באב וחגיגה והקהל מאחרין ולא מקדימין: תשעה באב אקדומי פורענות לא מקדמי חגיגה והקהל משום דאכתי לא מטא זמן חיובייהו
12 But with regard to the bringing the wood for the priests, the [fast of] Tisha B’Av, the hagigah (the festival sacrifice), and assembling the people they postpone [until after Shabbat] and they do not move them up. [The reason for the Fast of] Tisha B’av is that we do not hasten the approach of punishment. [The reason for] the festival sacrifice and the assembling of the people is that the time for their obligation has not yet arrived.
יג תנא חגיגה וכל זמן חגיגה מאחרין בשלמא חגיגה דאי מיקלע בשבתא מאחרינן לה לבתר שבתא אלא זמן חגיגה מאי היא
13 A Tanna taught: The festival sacrifice and all the period of the festival sacrifice is postponed. We understand what is meant by the festival sacrifice, that if it falls on Shabbat we postpone it till after Shabbat. But what is meant by the “period of the festival sacrifice”?
יד אמר רב אושעיא הכי קאמר חגיגה בשבת ועולת ראייה אפילו ביו"ט דזמן חגיגה מאחרין
14 R. Oshaya said: This is what he meant: The festival sacrifice [is postponed if its time] occurs on Shabbat, and the “burnt-offering of appearance” is postponed even until after the festival day which is the proper time for a festival sacrifice.
טו מני ב"ש היא דתנן [ב"ש אומרים] מביאין שלמים ביו"ט ואין סומכין עליהן
15 Who [said this]? It is Beit Shammai. For we learned: [Beit Shammai says]: One may bring well-being offerings (sh'lamim) on a Festival, but one may not lay hands (s'michah) upon them; no burnt offerings. But Beit Hillel says:
טז אבל לא עולות וב"ה אומרים מביאין שלמים ועולות וסומכין עליהן
16 Both burnt-offerings and offerings of wellbeing may be brought, and hands may be laid on.
יז רבא אמר חגיגה כל זמן חגיגה מאחרין טפי לא דתנן מי שלא חג ביו"ט הראשון של חג חוגג והולך את כל הרגל כולו ויום טוב האחרון של חג עבר הרגל ולא חג אינו חייב באחריותו
17 Rava said: The meaning is]: The festival sacrifice may be postponed for the whole period of the festival sacrifice, but not more, as we have learned If one did not bring a festival sacrifice on the first day of the festival, he may go on to do so throughout the festival, including the last day. If the festival passed without his having brought the festival sacrifice, he need not bring another in compensation.
יח רב אשי אמר חגיגה וכל זמן חגיגה מאחרין ואפי' עצרת דחד יומא מאחרין דתנן מודים שאם חל עצרת להיות בשבת שיום טבוח אחר השבת
18 R. Ashi said: [It means that] the festival sacrifice may be postponed for the whole period of the festival sacrifice, and even on Shavuot which is only one day, it may be postponed [for seven days], as we have learned: [Beth Hillel] agree that if Shavuot falls on Shabbat, the day for killing [the sacrifice] is after Shabbat.
יט אמר רבי אלעזר אמר רבי חנינא רבי נטע נטיעה בפורים
19 Rabbi Elazar said in the name of Rabbi Chanina: Rabbi planted a plant on Purim,
