Commentary for Berakhot 124:8
ואמר ואמרתי מיבעי ליה ותחס וחסתי מיבעי ליה אמר רבי אלעזר אמר לו דוד לשאול מן התורה בן הריגה אתה שהרי רודף אתה והתורה אמרה בא להרגך השכם להרגו אלא צניעות שהיתה בך היא חסה עליך
It ought to be "And I said"; "but it spared"! It ought to be "but I spared." R. Eleazar said : Thus spake David to Saul, "According to the Torah, thou art liable to be put to death, because thou art a pursuer ; and the Torah declares that if one comes to kill thee, kill him first. But the modesty which is manifest in thee has spared thee." In what did [Saul's modesty] consist? For it is written, "And he came to the sheep-cotes by the way, where was a cave ; and Saul went in to cover his feet" (ibid. 5:4).
