Commentary for Berakhot 72:7

איני והאמר רב נחמן אמר רבה בר אבוה הני מתחלי דערלה אסירי הואיל ונעשו שומר לפירי ושומר לפירי אימת הוי בכופרא וקא קרי ליה שומר לפירי

But it is not so ! For Rab Nahman has said in the name of Rabbah b. Abbuha : The calyces surrounding dates are forbidden because of 'Orlah, since they are the protection of the fruit ; and when are they the protection of the fruit? In the early stages [of the fruit's growth], then are they called the protection of the fruit !
