Halakhah for Sanhedrin 41:3

<big><strong>מתני׳</strong></big> (דברים יז, יז) לא ירבה לו נשים אלא שמנה עשרה רבי יהודה אומר מרבה הוא לו ובלבד שלא יהו מסירות את לבו ר' שמעון אומר אפילו אחת ומסירה את לבו הרי זה לא ישאנה אם כן למה נאמר לא ירבה לו נשים דאפילו כאביגיל:

— EVEN THOUGH THEY BE WOMEN LIKE ABIGAIL.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., even of the most virtuous, only eighteen are permitted, and not a single one who misleads is permitted. Abigail was the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. (I Sam. XXV, 3.) She is regarded in the Aggadah as one of the most remarkable women in Jewish history. V. Meg 15a. From the laws of the commandments is that which they, may their memory be blessed, said (Sanhedrin 21a) that it is permitted to marry up until eighteen wives, but not more - and even if they are like Avigail, who was righteous, alacritous and good. [This] and the rest of its details are in the second chapter of Sanhedrin. And this is from the commandments which are only upon the king.
