Halakhah for Sanhedrin 41:9
הני שמונה עשרה מנלן דכתיב (שמואל ב ג, ב) ויולדו לדוד בנים בחברון ויהי בכורו אמנון לאחינועם היזרעאלית ומשנהו כלאב לאביגיל אשת נבל הכרמלי והשלישי אבשלום בן מעכה והרביעי אדוניה בן חגית והחמישי שפטיה בן אביטל והששי יתרעם לעגלה אשת דוד אלה ילדו לדוד בחברון
each 'kahennah' implyingsix, which, with the original six, makes eighteen in all. Rabina objected:Why not assume that 'kahennah' impliestwelve,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I.e., as many again, six and six. ');"><sup>16</sup></span> and 'we-kahennah',twenty-four?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' He increases the number in geometrical progression, i.e., 6: 12: 24. ');"><sup>17</sup></span>

From the laws of the commandments is that which they, may their memory be blessed, said (Sanhedrin 21a) that it is permitted to marry up until eighteen wives, but not more - and even if they are like Avigail, who was righteous, alacritous and good. [This] and the rest of its details are in the second chapter of Sanhedrin. And this is from the commandments which are only upon the king.
